When we keep our students engaged, we’re not just keeping them busy; we’re helping them finish strong. The goal is to make these last days meaningful. Even a small change of pace can keep our students’ attention and make them feel like their hard work all year long matters.

The end of the school year doesn’t have to be a struggle to keep our students focused. In fact, it’s the perfect time to shake things up and bring in fun activities that still reinforce learning. There are many ways to make sure students stay excited and involved.

I’ve put together nine easy ideas for keeping our students engaged at the end of the year. Each one is designed to add energy, purpose, and a little bit of fun to these last weeks of school. 1. Task Cards to the Rescue

What’s the easiest way to keep your students on task? Get them out of their seats! That’s what I love about keeping my students engaged at the end of the year with task cards. They work well for a SCOOT game, where students rotate around the room answering different questions. You can even use them as a scavenger hunt, where they search for and solve task cards hidden around the classroom. I’ve even used them in an escape room format, where my students work in small groups to solve a set of context clue challenges before moving on to the next step. I also love to use task cards as the question cards for board games. When it comes to playing a review game, the hardest part is coming up with questions! One of my favorite ways to keep students engaged at the end of the year is by giving them the chance to showcase their learning in real time. By this time of year, our students have worked hard mastering different skills. Seeing their progress displayed builds confidence and keeps students’ attention. I love using interactive displays where my students add their names when they find specific skills in their work. If they spot a caption in a nonfiction book, they write their name on the caption poster. If they notice a contraction, they add it to the contraction chart. This turns skill review into a class-wide challenge that encourages friendly competition while reinforcing what they’ve learned throughout the year.

This is a fun way to keep students engaged because it takes the skills they have learned and puts them into the real world. Instead of knowing that they are learning about contractions, they are tapping into what they previously learned and recalling it. I love how adaptable this idea is. My students can identify figurative language, types of angles, or sentence structures, making it an easy way to reinforce skills across the curriculum. Since our students naturally love seeing their names displayed, this strategy works well for different learning styles.

Since the very end of the school year is a great time for reflection, I love tying this activity into a memory book or student survey. This creates a space for our students to write about their biggest growth moments. Whether used during the last weeks of school or even on the very last day, this interactive display helps our students see their hard work in action. It’s about celebrating progress before they move on to the next grade level!

4. Use Digital Activities to Engage Your Students

I love using digital activities as a way to change things up at the end of the year. When attention spans start to dwindle and the excitement of summer break kicks in, digital activities offer a fun way to reinforce skills while keeping things interactive. Whether it’s BOOM Cards for instant feedback or Google Slides for hands-on learning, digital resources make learning feel fresh. They also take the pressure off us because they’re low prep and easy to implement. This gives us more time to focus on guiding our students instead of managing endless stacks of papers. 

Digital resources also work well when I need a quick, engaging activity to reward hard work. I’ll often use BOOM Cards as a little reward that still reinforces learning. These self-checking, game-like cards keep our students’ attention while providing instant feedback. 5. Boost Engagement With Student Choice

By the very end of the school year, giving our students some control over their work can be a game-changer. At this time of year, our students are craving a little more freedom. Incorporating student choice makes learning feel less like a chore. I love using math centers, spelling activities, task cards, and digital activities where my students pick how they complete an assignment. If there are 24 questions, they only have to do 12. They get to pick which ones! This simple shift gives them a sense of ownership over their learning. It also ensures they get the academic practice they need before moving on to the next grade level.

Another great way to build student choice into the last weeks of school is through themed days or project-based learning. Letting students decide between different subject areas, like writing a personal narrative, researching a science topic, or creating a math-based design challenge, helps them stay engaged while reinforcing real-world connections. No matter how it’s incorporated, student choice is an easy way to increase engagement while giving them a little reward for all their hard work throughout the academic year.

6. Make Learning Fun With Interactive Responses

Sometimes, the best student engagement strategies are the simplest. Instead of calling on my students in the usual way, I turn responses into a movement game. If the answer is A, they touch their nose. If it’s B, they touch the floor! This adds an element of friendly competition while making sure everyone is actively participating. These fun activities keep energy levels high and encourage our students to stay focused and engaged.

This strategy is especially effective for our younger students who need movement while they learn. Even older students appreciate a change of pace in their routine. I’ve also used this technique in small groups or during digital activities. My students respond by clicking or dragging their answers instead of simply writing them down. These simple ways to increase student engagement make a huge difference, especially as our students start to feel the pull of summer vacation. Keeping things interactive and exciting is the best way to help our students stay focused and learning.

7. Differentiate to Meet All Skill Levels

If there’s one thing I feel strongly about, it’s differentiation. Every class has students at different skill levels. When we ignore this and teach to the average, we create learning gaps. Differentiation is the easiest way to avoid this. Sometimes we have students working on different skills, while other times it is the same skill at a different level. Whether it’s tweaking an assignment so our students can work at their own pace or providing multiple ways to practice a skill, differentiation helps keep students engaged at the end of the year, no matter where they are in their learning journey.

One of my favorite ways to do this is through color by number math activities. They provide an engaging mix of problem-solving and creativity. Since I believe so strongly in differentiation, I try to make it easy for you to put it into practice by providing you with differentiated options in my resources. For example, in my Place Value Color by Number resource, I included six differentiated puzzles that reinforce essential math skills. Your students solve place value problems, match their answers to a color key, and complete a mystery picture as they go. This activity works well for small groups, independent practice, or even as a little reward after a long lesson. Our students at different skill levels can work on a version that’s just right for them. No one feels frustrated or left behind. Plus, it’s an easy way to keep our students engaged while reviewing core concepts in a fun, hands-on way.

8. Let Students Take the Lead as Student Teacher

By the last couple weeks of school, our students know more than they realize! That’s why I love having a student teacher lead part of a lesson. When a student truly understands a concept, giving them the opportunity to teach their classmates builds confidence, leadership skills, and deeper understanding. I’ve found that when my students explain a skill in their own words, they often come up with explanations that resonate better with their peers. Sometimes, another student’s perspective is exactly what someone struggling with the concept needs to hear!

This is a fun way to keep students engaged while reinforcing their learning. I like to choose a few student leaders each day to explain a math strategy, vocabulary word, or science concept we’ve been working on. For my students who might be a little shy, I let them work in small groups to prepare their explanations. Even a quick two-minute lesson from a student teacher can make a big impact on how well the rest of the class grasps the material.

9. Hands-On Activities

One of the best ways I know to keep students engaged and learning at the end of the year is through hands-on learning. This might look like interactive games or center activities, or it might be adding a craft to a review activity.

I love using math crafts throughout the school year. They are a nice break from our typical practice activities. This Spring Math Craft is perfect for the end of the school year. It is a great way to review the basic operations through hands-on learning.

One of the challenges asks students to design a launch to help a turkey escape from a pumpkin patch. It’s the perfect way to bring STEM into the holiday season.

What makes these activities stand out is that they promote teamwork. I often group my students into small teams. While in these teams, they brainstorm, design, and test their ideas together. These November STEM activities provide opportunities to work on skills such as communication, collaboration, and creative problem-solving. Plus, it’s a great way to review scientific concepts in a fun and engaging context. One of the most exciting November activities for elementary students I use is the Thanksgiving Math Mystery: Who Done It? Students must solve these problems to reveal the next clue, working together in small groups to figure out “Who done it?” This activity is a great way to reinforce math during November while incorporating a bit of detective work, which students absolutely love.

This mystery game fits perfectly into my lesson plans, whether we use it in morning work, independent work, or small group rotations. It provides practice with math concepts. It also challenges students to think critically and use logical reasoning to solve the case. Plus, it’s a fun fall activity that works for all students, including older kids who enjoy the added challenge.

6. Write a Class Cookbook for November Activities

Writing a class cookbook is one of my favorite November activities for elementary students. This is a great way to bring in the spirit of the holiday season while reinforcing writing skills. I introduce this activity by talking about our favorite foods we enjoy during the holidays. Each student shares a dish they love, whether it’s their grandma’s famous pumpkin pie or a family recipe for mashed potatoes.

Then, we walk through how to write a recipe. We focus on important elements like ingredients, instructions, and clear, concise steps. It’s the perfect time to review sequencing words like “first,” “next,” and “finally,” which ties into our language arts curriculum. After that, each student writes out their recipe. This project also ties in with math because we practice measuring ingredients and talking about fractions during our discussions. By the end of the project, each student has contributed to a beautiful cookbook that we share with families. It’s a perfect keepsake for the holiday season. 7. How to Catch a Plump and Perky Turkey – Read Aloud for November Activities

Read aloud time is always a hit among my students. One of my favorite November activities for elementary students is reading A Plump and Perky Turkey. I love introducing this book by asking my students how they think they could catch a turkey. This sparks so many creative ideas! After a fun discussion, we dive into the story.

As we read, I pause to ask questions about the characters’ plans. I encourage my students to make predictions about what will happen next. This keeps them engaged and thinking critically. After reading, we transition into a creative writing activity where they come up with their own plans to catch a turkey. They illustrate their ideas and write a step-by-step guide, which ties into our lessons on sequencing and how-to writing. If you want to take it a step further, add a STEM component to this activity and let students build what they wrote about. Using simple materials like construction paper, pipe cleaners, recyclable boxes, and anything else you have on hand, students can create their own turkey-catching prototype.

8. Create a Thankful Turkey for November Activities

Another favorite in our lineup of November activities for elementary students is creating a thankful turkey. This activity is a perfect way to incorporate gratitude into our classroom. While we are showing our gratitude, we are also practicing writing and fine motor skills. I introduce the activity by discussing everything we are thankful for, whether it’s family, friends, or even our pets.

I give each student a turkey template. They write something they are thankful for on each feather. As they decorate their turkeys, we work on spelling, handwriting, and using descriptive words. This activity enhances their writing skills and fosters a sense of community in the classroom as we share what we are grateful for.

9. Practice Graphing for November Activities

Graphing is an important math skill, and I love finding ways to make it fun for my students. One of my go-to November activities for elementary students is practicing graphing with a Thanksgiving twist. I start by having the students survey each other about their favorite Thanksgiving foods such as turkey, stuffing, pumpkin pie, and more. This is a great way to introduce data collection and get everyone excited about the topic.

Once we have the data, I have my students create bar graphs to represent their findings. We talk about the different parts of a graph, like the axes, labels, and titles. Once we have a good handle on the parts of the graph, we chat about how to interpret the information. This is a fun way to reinforce math skills and a great introduction to interpreting data.

Importance of Teaching Place Value

Picture place value as this intriguing secret code in the world of mathematics. It’s not just a topic in the curriculum but the bedrock upon which we build a deeper understanding of numbers and mathematical concepts that follow, through many many years of school. Yep – it is that important.  And with a topic that important we must give it time each day in our classrooms.

I know what you are thinking, “time every day?” Yes! Since place value is one of those math concepts that gradually builds upon itself, we can build in complexity and difficulty too.

Here are 7 reasons why teaching place value is of utmost importance:

1. Understanding the Base-10 System: Place value introduces students to the base-10 system, where each digit’s position represents a power of 10. This understanding is fundamental to our number system and forms the basis for all future mathematical operations.
2. Building Number Sense: Place value helps develop number sense, which is the ability to understand the magnitude and relationships between numbers. Students learn to recognize the value of each digit and how it contributes to the overall value of a number.
3. Reading and Writing Numbers: With a solid grasp of place value, students can read and write numbers accurately. They understand that each digit holds a specific place and value, allowing them to articulate numbers in both written and numerical form.
4. Enhancing Arithmetic Skills: Place value is essential for performing addition and subtraction with regrouping (carrying and borrowing). It enables students to manipulate numbers more efficiently and understand the mechanics of arithmetic operations.
5. Laying the Groundwork for Multiplication and Division: Place value understanding is crucial when students begin to multiply and divide. It helps them comprehend the concept of multiplying by powers of 10, which becomes more apparent as they work with larger numbers.
6. Facilitating Mental Math: Understanding how numbers are composed and decomposed helps in quick estimation and mental calculation
7. Preparing for Higher Level Math: Foundational knowledge is needed for tackling more advanced skills such as decimals, fractions, and algebra.

Phew…. That was a lot!  Hopefully, you understand that place value is a skill that needs to be mastered and spiraled throughout the year!

Place value is not just another thing we teach. It’s the golden key that unlocks the world of numbers. Our students must genuinely grasp the understanding of place value, as it is the starting point for their math adventures!

The Challenge of Teaching Place Value

But let’s be honest – teaching place value isn’t always smooth sailing, right? It’s like trying to navigate a maze for some of our students. The younger our students, the more difficulty they have with developing a concrete understanding of abstract concepts. Yeah I know, the words ‘concrete’ and ‘abstract’ don’t go well together in a sentence.  So now you see the problem.

One reason place value can be tricky is that our learners often learn best through hands-on, tangible experiences. They thrive when they can see, touch, and manipulate objects to understand abstract ideas.  

That’s why it’s essential to build a strong foundation with place value blocks like the picture above, using a place value mat to build numbers and to create and decompose the smallest numbers to the larger numbers. The concept of place value is abstract in nature. Bridging the gap between the concrete and abstract can feel like a tall hurdle, but as educators, it’s our creative superpower to take these abstract ideas and serve them up in a relatable, interactive, and fun way!

Students must be able to create a given target number with base-ten blocks. It doesn’t matter if they are two-digit numbers or three-digit numbers at this point because this place value activity is differentiated for your students. You can meet them at any level with this fun game making this place value activity perfect for 2nd grade, 3rd grade or even for 4th grade review!

The Solution: Place Value Skills Swirls

So…. you might be wondering, how in the world do we make the abstract concepts of place value relatable and downright enjoyable for our students, especially when they’re all coming from different learning backgrounds? Well, I’ve got some nifty tricks up my sleeves and these place value swirls are one of my favorite ways!

These classroom tested Place Value Swirls are not your ordinary classroom fare. These little gems are all about diving into numbers in different ways –  expanded form, word form, standard form, and base-ten blocks. It’s like an adventure of numbers that will help your students master these concepts. 

Here’s how to play this fun place value game:

1. Pass out the “game board” to each student. Then add the differentiation, focusing on the different place value of the numbers OR by the place value concepts of different ways to write a number. 
2. Students will then cut out all of their strips and place them in a row to be able to see all the different number cards.
3. Find the start strip and paste it to “START”. Look at the question, answer it, and hunt for your answer on the cut out strips. If it’s there, GREAT! If not, look at the problem again!
4. Play continues around the page until all the strips have been used!

This resource has three levels for your learners – numbers to the tens place, hundreds place, and thousands place. No one’s left out, and everyone gets a slice of the fun. Why These Place Value Lessons Work 

What’s the real magic here? These activities are sneaky little geniuses. Your students won’t even know they’re learning because they’ll think they’re playing games! Yes, you heard it right – it’s education in disguise.  I like to call it undercover learning. Not all our students have the same knowledge of place value. Some might be working with tens and hundreds while others are ready for the challenge of thousands. Guess what? This resource is a great way to reach all learners!

I’ve designed these hands-on activities with differentiation magic. When your students dive into them, they won’t even realize that there are different levels at play. The whole class is having a blast together. No one’s feeling left out, and most importantly, no one’s left behind.

Let’s start with the basics… This January Math Craftivity with a winter theme to engage my learners in the cold months. It turns foundational math skills into a wintry math adventure! First Grade: Building Foundations

For the youngest learners, this is a fun way to focus on math fact fluency using single-digit addition and subtraction printable activities. The craftivity offers engaging snowglobe and snowman designs, which help basic math practice turn into an engaging and creative math experience!

Implementation Steps

1. Allow students to choose their preferred craft. 

2. Distribute problems suited to their skill level. 

3. Before coloring, check over their work for correct answers. 

4. Afterwards, students color, cut, and paste their solutions onto their craft! (Added bonus of working on those fine motor skills!)

Cross-Curricular Extension

Half-sheets of paper are provided for students to write a story problem that goes with one of their number sentences. Two versions are included: One with primary lines and another with intermediate lines. 

Second and Third Grade: Bridging the Gap

As students progress, introduce two-digit addition and subtraction. The math craftivity provides options for regrouping, which, as we know, adds an extra layer of challenge! 4. Watch as students confidently tackle the challenges, turning their solutions into a winter wonderland!

Cross-Curricular Extension

Students can use full writing pages to craft a descriptive writing piece about their math craftivity. They could even create a story where their crafted character takes center stage. The writing lines printable version comes with primary lines that are perfect for those new cursive writing skills and one with intermediate lines that are great for any writing piece. 

Fourth Grade: Mastering Multiplication and Division

The upper grades dive into multiplication and division with a single or multiple-digit divisor. 

Implementation Steps

1. Have students select their craft.
2. Pass out the differentiated problems involving multiplication and division (or addition)
3. Give students time to complete their independent practice of the skill. 
4. Students turn in work to be checked before being given the green light to go be creative!

Cross-Curricular Extension

Just like for 3rd grade, challenge students to write a descriptive story using their craft as an element to their writing! Utilize the two different line options once again for further differentiation and encourage students to get creative!

Ask students to choose their favorite thing about Spring and create a dot drawing!  Simply give each student a piece of dot paper, and students will color the dots in a pattern to create a picture.  If you would like the dot paper I use (plus some other spring activities), you can grab mine here for free!

Crafts and coloring are so much fun, but we still have to get work done.  Right?  Why not do both with Spring themed Craftivities?

While Spring is a beautiful season, it can also be pretty hectic with everything going on this time of year.  A print-and-go activity that requires virtually no prep is such a lifesaver for busy teachers!

When dealing with Spring though, not just any old boring worksheet will do.  Choose printable resources that are different from what you might typically do in class but also require students to review previously taught skills and think critically.

It sounds like a lot to ask, but a solution is easier than you think!  Try a Spring “Who Done It?” Mystery!  Students work out math problems to crack codes to figure out which bunny stole the missing Easter eggs!

Students will love the fact they have to solve a mystery, but you will love that they are actively engaged in reviewing important math standards!

9. Grass Buddies

• Give students cups to decorate to look like a person.  
• Students should add soil, then poke holes in the soil.  
• Have students place seeds in the holes and cover them with soil.  
• Students should then add a little water to dampen the soil and leave their cups in the sun.

Once students have created their Grass Buddies, they should write their own version of the directions and illustrate each step.  Grab your free “How To” paper here!

Be sure to give students time in class to check out their Grass Buddies over the next few days!  It’s the perfect science connection for life cycles and needs of a plant.  Let them document their day-to-day observations in their science journal. 

10. Spring Observations

Give your students the chance to observe and share what they think is important about Spring!  On a nice day, take your students outside and let them choose a place to sit where they can focus and not be distracted.  Tell them to sit quietly and focus on what they smell, hear, feel, taste, and see.

Once back in the classroom, ask each student to fill out and color a Spring Observation sheet.  Not only will students write information they found while they were outside, but they can use their prior knowledge about Spring as well.

Allow students to share their finished pages with the class, then hang them in the hallway for a sweet reminder of why they love Spring!

1. Laminate To Write On

To keep your Task Cards durable and reusable, laminate them!  They can be laminated on their own or glued to colored cardstock and then laminated, but don’t skip this step!  Task cards can then be written on with dry-erase markers and simply wiped off when students are finished.  This means you can reuse them over and over for years to come.

2. Centers

Students love working somewhere else other than their desks!  Use Task Cards in various areas around your room as center work.  They are quick and easy to pull out and make planning (and changing) centers a breeze!

3. Fast Finishers Work

Every teacher has heard this phrase in their classroom, “I’m done.  Now what?”  Responding with, “Wait quietly” is not an option, but task cards sure are!  Designate an “I’m Done”  basket and stock it with Task Cards that keep students busy learning while the rest of the class continues working. The cards are always there ready for students to complete as many or as few as their extra time allows.

4. Whole Group Activity

Do you have a standard that everyone in your class needs to review?  Pull out task cards!  Read each question to the whole class, discuss together the question or how to solve the problem, and have students write their answers on a whiteboard.  Quick and easy, but effective!

5. Assessments

Test anxiety is no joke, even for the younger grades!  Why not assess your students with brightly colored kid-friendly task cards? Questions are limited to one per card instead of one long, intimidating test which means less stress for your students.  And if they aren’t nervous, students are more likely to show what they really know!

6. SCOOT

Any activity that involves movement is going to be a winner with your kids, so let them SCOOT!  Make a “path” of task cards around your room.  Each student starts at one card, answers the question on their answer sheet, then waits for your cue.  When you say, “SCOOT!”, they scoot themselves along the floor or desk until they reach the next card.  Continue this pattern until students have scooted to every card!  

7. Interactive Games

Another whole group activity!  Read each task card aloud to the group, but instead of using an answer sheet, students walk to one of 4 corners around the room, each labeled A, B, C, or D.  Wherever they stand, that’s their answer!

8. Play Board Games

Got Shoots and Ladders?  How about Candy Land?  Grab any board game off the shelf and let kids play!  The catch?  Students must pull a task card and answer the question correctly to earn the right to roll the die!  

You could even make your own games using my Game Boards For Any Set Of Task Cards Free Resource! Students answer the Task Card and, if they are correct, roll the die to see how many spaces they move!

9. WAR Card Game

Let students use math task cards to play War. Working with partners, students draw one task card.  Both students read the card and work out the answer.  The student who answers correctly first gets the card.  Keep playing until all cards have been answered.   

10. QR codes

Add technology to your task cards by using QR codes!  QR codes bring your students a digital element that makes task cards even more fun!  Once students have answered the question on a card, they can use a device to scan the code and see if their answers are correct!

11. Scavenger Hunt

Why not make work an adventure?  Hide each task card in different places around the room and let your students try to find them!  When they do, they must answer the question and leave the clue in its place for other students to find. To make this activity even more exciting, try moving to another area of the school – like the library!  This is a perfect activity to use around Easter when you can hide task cards in plastic eggs!

12. Spiral Review Morning Work

Quick and easy morning work that helps review previously taught material?  Task cards fit the bill!  Using your document camera, project 2-4 cards each morning for students to work on.  A less techy option?  Place task cards (grouped by the same previously taught standard) in Ziplock bags for students to “check out” for Morning Work.

13. Jeopardy Style Game

America’s favorite quiz game comes to your classroom with a simple pocket chart and task cards placed in columns!  Read the question to the class and have students “buzz in” to answer.   Little prep work, but big fun for everyone!

14. Substitute Work

Every teacher knows that it is harder to be out for a day than to just work sick!  Writing sub plans is stressful, but task cards can make this so much easier!  Assigning task cards that you can pull out quickly (or even have already stored in a “Sub Tub”) will cut down on time spent thinking of what work to leave and gathering materials!  

15. Parent Volunteers

If you have parents who want to help in the classroom, task cards are an easy way to put their valuable assistance to good use!  They can work one on one with students who struggle by reading problems or questions, helping students stay focused, or providing extra support in solving problems or working out answers.

16. Boom Cards

Do you love task cards, but want to increase student interest by using technology?  You can have both with Boom Cards!  Boom Cards are digital task cards that students complete on a computer, tablet, or other devices. An added benefit is that they provide immediate feedback to students. Students are prompted to correct a wrong answer before moving on. There are so many benefits to adding technology to your classroom that you can’t go wrong!

   

17. Class Competitions

Nothing makes students work harder than the good ol’ competition!  Divide your students into groups.  Have one student from each team come up to the board to answer the question on a task card.  All students who answer correctly win a point for their team! 

18. Homework

It can be time-consuming to pull resources to share with parents who want extra practice to work on at home.  Keeping task cards printed off and ready to send home is a great way to quickly help those parents while saving you time!

19. Sponge Activities

When your students have even a few minutes of downtime, you know that can lead to chaos!  Whether you finished a lesson early or have your students waiting in line, use task cards as a way to keep everyone engaged and learning.   You could even choose students to “be in charge” of reading the cards! It’s a great way to fill those extra couple of minutes.

20. Exit Tickets

Task cards are the perfect quick and easy way to check for student understanding at the end of your lesson.  Project a few cards and give students the last 5-7 minutes of class to write answers.  Collect their papers to see who “got it” and who needs extra help.

21. Partner Work

Sometimes, students just “get it” better when another student explains something.  Allow students to work together on task cards!  Students answer the question on their own, then check their answers for accuracy.  If they are correct, they get to move on to another card.  If one or both students are incorrect, they can work together to fix their mistake.   

22. Differentiation

Task cards are a very cost-effective and simple way to allow students to work on their level, but still have all students working on the same activity!   Pull out the level of cards that each student (or group of students) needs to work on, and no one else in the room will be the wiser.

23. Wheel of Fortune(ish)

This game has Wheel of Fortune elements, but with a classroom twist!  Divide your class into two teams.  One student from each team answers the question on a task card. If BOTH students are correct, they get to add a letter to a phrase you have written on the board. Students can guess at any time what the phrase is.  

24. Math Journals

Print off 3-4 task cards on one page and have students add this to their Math Notebook or binder. Students must answer each card right there on the page. You can check their binder to see their thinking.

I don’t know about you, but math practice is all too often met with moans and groans.  I don’t know what it is about math, but year after year math is the subject that makes students say “UGH!”  I want my students to love math!  I want them to be good at math!  And most of all, I want them to look forward to math!  That’s why I love mixing math and creativity together whenever I have the chance! Color by number activities are a favorite in my classroom. I am so excited to share with you 6 reasons why my students and  I love them and use them all year long.

What Are Color By Number Worksheets?

Color by number isn’t what it used to be!  You probably remember doing some version of a color by number worksheet when you were in elementary school. However, they were probably as easy as finding a number and matching it to a given color to complete a picture. Fast-forward a few decades and we as teachers have found that we can actually blend fun and learning. In fact, it’s rarely actually coloring by number unless you are teaching pre-k or kindergarten and working on number identification.  Now a days, the term Color by Code is a better description of these fun and engaging activities.  Why?  Because the code at the top of the page more often than not is not numbers but some other academic skill. 

6 Reasons Why I Use Color by Number Activities

1. Repeated Skills Practice

In addition to the repetition, Color by Number activities allow me to provide specific skills practice for my students.  Each activity is focused on one skill.  This allows me to really hone in on the skill we are working on or reviewing.  This targeted skills practice is what helps my students master their new skills.  

2. Self-Checking Activity

Color by Number activities are a great self-checking activity.  Students can often tell right away if they have made a mistake because the colors don’t match up.  Additionally, you can easily provide the picture key for students to use as a check.   

3.  Easy to Prep

My friends, it does not make you a bad teacher to include easy to prep or no prep activities in your lesson plans.  To the contrary, I’d say it makes you a smart teacher.  The key to using no prep activities is to make sure they aren’t just busy work.  Be selective in your activities and make sure the activity you choose helps further your students understanding of the learning objective.

4. Highly Engaging

To say that my students love Color by Number activities is an understatement.  They actually ask for them!  To my teacher ear it’s like hearing the words “more math practice, please!”  My students always get so excited when I tell them it’s time for a color-by-number activity. You better believe I don’t get that same reaction when I say it is time for math problems. 

5. Differentiation Made Easy

In today’s classroom, differentiation is not just important, it is an expectation.  We all know that each student will learn at a different pace. This is true across all grade levels and subject areas. Differentiated instruction is so important to help students succeed.  One of the easiest ways to differentiate for student needs in through small group teaching.  When I pull students for small groups, I also have some differentiated practice activities for them to do.  They know that these activities are something they complete during their next center rotation.  This set-up and organization helps me to always have differentiated practice for each and every student.   

For review, I often pull completely different Color by Number activities depending on the skill each students needs to practice and review.  By using both of these differentiation methods I can confidently rest knowing that each student is getting just what they need. 

6. Save Time

This final reason is really a culmination of the other five.  When all of these things work together the result is that time is saved.  Precious time that I can then use on something else that needs my attention.  Sometimes that is a student or planning a more elaborate activity.  Other times that saved time means I have more time for myself and with my family.  Both are very important!

Reading is such an important part of our day-to-day life in the classroom. I love to incorporate holiday reading all year long. It is a fun change of pace for the students and brings joy and excitement. There are lots of fun, Valentine-themed books options for the holiday!  Use them as a mentor text or just as a read aloud.  And . . . for a fun change of pace throw in an audio book or a book video.   

This simple craft uses easy to find supplies including:

• Construction paper
• Stickers (optional)
• Crayons/Markers
• Scissors
• Glue

The students love the connection to the book and it makes a great way to add in discussion about the story elements, sequencing or retelling too!  

This cute love monster can be added to a bulletin board, glued to the front of a paper bag or box and used as a cardholder, or incorporated into the class Valentine’s Day party.  

One of my favorite Valentine’s Day party activities is doing activity stations.  With a few parent volunteers we can fill the afternoon with some fun Valentine’s Day fun.  This craft is perfect for these types of stations.

Planning for Christmas learning in the classroom doesn’t have to be overwhelming, expensive, or an all-day meeting time sucker. These are some of my favorite activities for the holiday season.  Literally, smack a reindeer or Santa onto anything and the students are excited to work!  

Get the Class into the Christmas Spirit

The very first thing I do is create Elf Names for all my students!  This kicks off the joy of the season in such a fun way.  Elf names are generated by their own name and birth date.  Then we add new name tags to our desk with our Elf name and students are able to color and personalize them!  If you only do one thing, grab my  Elf Name freebie because it is always a crowd-pleaser.   I remember one of my students saying, “I’m going to have my family call me this all month!” (I’m sure they enjoyed that

Your students will love learning about fractions with this fun rainbow fractions activity. I mean, what could be more fun than fractions and fruit loops!

Fractions are one of those math skills that our students will use for the rest of their lives. So it’s important to help them build a solid foundation and understanding of fractions in the early years.

This super engaging St. Patrick’s Day fraction activity is sure to help your students master those important fraction basics while having fun too. In this activity, students will be creating a rainbow using fruit loops, and the rainbow becomes the basis for the fractions. Students then write fractions to represent each color of their rainbow.

After using this activity for a few years, I have found that this activity really helps students clear up any misunderstandings they may have when it comes to the numerator and denominator.

Here’s how it works . . .

I start by handing students a blank sheet of construction paper or cardstock. I really like to use the large construction paper if it is available. Then I add a pile of Fruit Loops (I buy the generic ones – but any type of fruit cereal will work) and I tell the students to make a rainbow on their paper using the cereal. I let them decide what kind of rainbow, how many rows to include and what colors to use.

Next, we use the rainbow to make fractions. Students first have to figure out how many fruit loops they used in order to find the denominator of the fraction. Then they have to count each color to find the numerator. They write a fraction for each color of the rainbow.

If your students are learning how to reduce fractions, you can require that they also write the fraction in its fully reduced form.

After getting their fractions checked, students write their fractions on the Rainbow Fractions page that I give them. It’s included in the free download for you to use too!

Once they are done, I have the students use crayons to create a scene around their rainbow. In my classroom, we always do a St. Patrick’s Day scene because that is when we study fractions. But . . . you can use this activity any time of the year. Rainbows never go out of season!

Add a Writing Element Too!

If you like to double-dip, then you can use this picture as a writing prompt too! Have students write about their picture using a prompt you provide or with the picture as the prompt. Some fun writing ideas include:

• What’s At the End of the Rainbow?
• How to Catch a Leprechaun
• Why is a Rainbow so Colorful?
• One day I saw a leprechaun . . .
• One spring day I . . .
• Somewhere over the rainbow . . .

When students are finished with their pictures, make sure to create a fun and eye-catching display. These colorful fraction pictures make a great bulletin board, locker or hallway display. We always get compliments on them and I know you will too!

“Understanding place value” grows in complexity every year.  By 3rd grade students are expected to be experts in place value so they can “fluently add and subtract within 1000” using number sense strategies based on place value (I’m pretty sure that might even be my 2nd grade standard!).  How do we meet such lofty expectations?  Use these place value activities to help nurture, grow and expand your student’s understanding.

Number Chants

Make this fun!  We chant in different ways – boys, girls, whisper, yell, slow-mo, high-pitch, low-pitch, cheerleader, etc…  You can grab them HERE or by clicking on the picture.

Number Breakdowns

One easy way, again I start in whole group, is to put a “target number on the board.”  I collect equations from the class.  I call this Number Breakdown.  It’s a great whole-group activity.  Eventually your students who sit silent will begin to participate after many of these are practiced.  They will catch on to some of the other student’s thinking and offer suggestions.

Remember those number chants?  That is a great way to get our struggling students participating.  If they can SAY a number, then they can write the expanded form to most numbers.  Literally each number they say is written down, add your plus signs, and they’re golden!

As a visual, I also try to show how the students came up with their equation.  I show how they separated the hundreds, tens or ones.  See the pic below.

Creating Model Forms

Model forms are essential for understanding place value.   Place value mats are an important tool to help your students understand how to understand the concrete to abstract relationship.  You can get my maps by clicking HERE.

Allow time for students to use base ten blocks to represent certain numbers.  Students should spend some time creating numbers like 134, 229 and other 3-digit numbers to understand the hundreds, tens ones relationship.  Once these are created, base ten blocks are a great way to show how to manipulate the blocks to create the same number.

For instance, 143 can be 1 hundred 4 tens and 3 ones OR 1 hundred 3 tens and 13 ones.  Conversely, you can give students a number like 2 hundreds 3 tens and 17 ones for the students to create the number in standard form.  This is why I am and advocate of the place value mat that has two ten-frames on it.  This helps students understand the relationship between the values.   Don’t forget the relationship between 10’s and 100’s as well for students!

The importance of understanding model form will help your students transition nicely from basic addition and subtraction to addition and subtraction with regrouping.  The concept will be easier for your students to understand and apply.  If you are just starting out, you may want to read about how to teach 2-digit addition with regrouping first.

Those are the 3 EASY activities to build a strong foundation for place value.  The importance of place value understanding is so critical, that it should really be something that is practiced daily. A literacy expert, Timothy Shanahan studied that students need to see a word approximately 10-15 times to learn it fully.  A special education student would take double that amount of time!  Imagine what that number would be for automaticity in mathematics where concepts are so abstract!  Practice is key.

In my number of the day worksheets, I offer a wide variety of activities to practice using 3-digit numbers.  These activities are important for your student’s development of number sense and place value.  I have three products available around this concept.
