Whether you’re a seasoned educator or new to the world of differentiation, one thing is clear: every student in your class is unique. They each have their own learning styles, preferences, and academic needs. Some students thrive on visuals, while others crave hands-on experiences. How do you ensure you’re meeting each student’s academic level as well? Don’t worry! I’m here to help! Welcome to the world of differentiated phonics literacy centers, where learning becomes a personalized journey and what you’ll see to be an easy way to reach all learners.

The Power of Phonics Literacy Centers

Before we dive into some differentiated activities for literacy centers, let’s take a moment to explore the incredible benefits of literacy centers in your classroom:

Individualized Learning: Literacy centers allow you to cater to each student’s own level, ensuring that they receive instruction at their specific skill level.

Active Engagement: Students actively participate in hands-on activities, making learning enjoyable and memorable.

Improved Collaboration: Centers often involve small groups, which is a great way to promote teamwork and communication skills.

Targeted Skill Development: Centers can be designed to focus on specific literacy skills, such as phonics, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and writing.

Assessment Opportunities: Literacy centers provide you with insights into your students’ progress and areas where they may need additional support.

Flexibility: They can be adapted for various grade levels and used with diverse learning styles.

To learn more about how to implement centers at the beginning of the year, make sure to read How to Effectively Incorporate Differentiated Literacy Centers in Your Classroom.

What are Differentiated Phonics Centers?

Differentiated literacy centers come into play AFTER you have provided your initial whole class phonics instruction of the new skill. These stations are a spiral review of activities, to allow individual practice of the skill in a leveled way. These activities differentiate instruction so your students can find individual success. Differentiated literacy centers offer leveled activities at various stations, ensuring each student can achieve success.

While most differentiation focuses on each student’s learning style, these centers use product output to allow students to respond to the same standard/indicator at different levels. For example, if you are focusing on digraphs, some of your students may match activities, others may fill-in the blank, yet others may create their own examples. The teacher preps ONE center, but the students’ response work is leveled. This way, each child can build confidence with the given skills, even students working at a lower level! Differentiation is one of the best ways to build confidence in skills, is easy on the teacher and reaches the individual needs of students.

Intentional Grouping with Differentiated Literacy Center Activities

After your whole group instruction, when it’s time for your students to engage with literacy stations, you want to ensure they receive practice that aligns with their current skill levels. I have put together an amazing bundle of differentiated literacy centers that will help you do just that – without hours of research for your lesson plans. With a variety of activities already differentiated at three different levels, this valuable tool will have just what you need right at your fingertips!

Each activity in the bundle includes a symbol in the top right corner indicating the differentiation level. This makes it a breeze to match activities to groups of students:

A circle represents activities for your struggling students working below grade level.

A triangle represents activities suitable for students at grade level.

A square represents activities for students working above grade level.

These symbols not only keep you organized but also help you track your students’ progress throughout the year and help keep these literacy activities organized for your center time.

Differentiated Phonics Literacy Centers are a Game Changer!

Are you ready to see some examples of the game-changing resources in the Differentiated Literacy Centers Bundle? Let’s take a closer look!

Build a Pizza and More

Our Build a Pizza activity is a huge hit among students. They get to create their dream pizza while mastering diphthongs in a fun way. From ‘oy’ and ‘aw’ to ‘ou’ and ‘oi’, these phonics skills come to life through fun and engaging exercises.

The best part? There are three differentiated response sheet worksheets for each activity! Students below level write the target words on top of each pizza. Students at grade level write the target diphthong, and students above level write the entire word without visual support. Not hungry for diphthongs? Also on the menu are Digraph Sandwiches! Your learners will read the sandwich topping card and match it to the topping to build a digraph sandwich!

Each literacy skill in the bundle includes a Build a. . . center activity. These are LOVED by students because they are so interactive. Each option caters to a wide range of abilities ensuring meaningful practice and mastery.

Sorting Sounds

The sorting activities in the bundle are a game-changer for teaching sound patterns and spelling. For example, the Vowel Team Clues activity uses pictures and words to identify vowel teams. Students read words, name pictures, and map them before using differentiated answer sheets to practice spelling.

Students working below level will write the words using a word bank. Those working on grade level will write the letters from the vowel team to complete each word. If any are working above level they will identify the image and then write the word.

Each resource in the bundle includes a sorting activity that will get your students actively engaged in identifying and classifying the target skill. These engaging activities are designed to make learning phonics a breeze!

These are just two of the hands-on, interactive activities that will engage your students during their word work center or small group time! And just like these examples, all of the activities in this bundle put 3 differentiated options right at your fingertips so you can plan differentiated literacy centers quickly and easily.

Grab the Complete Bundle!

This Differentiated Literacy Centers Bundle includes 5 incredible resources for short vowels, digraphs, blends, diphthongs, long vowels, and r-controlled vowels (aka Bossy R). These lessons can be used from first grade to third grade students that need some remedial instruction. The bundle is a full year of phonics practice lessons playing a crucial role in saving you a lot of time planning and hunting down centers for each ability level! Throw out the busy work and replace it with meaningful phonics practice.

And…..as a special bonus, I’ve included four additional skills that will further enrich your literacy centers!

If you are thinking “well this sounds great, but it’s only ONE center. What do I do for the rest?” I’ve got you covered! You can read about what other different centers to include at my blog post “Easy Activities to Plan for Literacy Centers” showcasing activities like decodable passages, word cards, incorporating a writing center and more!

As each year unfolds, I find myself more excited about sharing the wonders of nonfiction reading with my students. Living in a world where information is just a click away, we’re truly spoiled. Yet, the real magic lies in having those nonfiction reading skills to navigate through texts! Be it a captivating book or an intriguing newspaper article, there’s no question about the value of this skill. So, do you want to ensure your students confidently navigate through whatever content comes their way? Look no further! This blog post is your ticket to exploring all that nonfiction reading comprehension strategies have to offer.

You don’t have to be in middle school or high school to master nonfiction books. Older students might have a higher reading level, but young readers can use nonfiction reading strategies to help them get the most out of informational text too. Over the years I have found that the key to helping younger readers master nonfiction skills is to start from the beginning of the year. Making both fictional texts and nonfiction texts a part of our classroom culture is one of the first steps.

These tips and ideas for helping students improve their nonfiction reading skills will help all students, regardless of their ability or reading level. I have seen them work well in supporting English Language Learners too.

Help Students Fall in Love with Nonfiction

Like many things we teach, finding an engaging way to teach a new skill or topic is half the battle. Teaching nonfiction comprehension skills is no different. That’s why I love to start by introducing my students to my favorite nonfiction books. When students see that I have “favorites” in the nonfiction category they realize that they can too.

Fiction books aren’t the only ones that have a vast amount of possibilities! I find great joy in guiding my students to the discovery that there are adventures and inspiring stories within the pages of nonfiction books too. My students quickly learn that they are not just sources of information but a great way to learn more about science, social studies, and everyday life.

We always begin by exploring nonfiction books. I let students’ interests be the guide as I challenge students to find a book that they want to learn new information from. I often start with background knowledge and ask students what is something they want to learn more about. Then I let them find a book on that topic. If possible, this is a great lesson to do in the library.

I do this because students can practice the same nonfiction reading strategies in different books. That’s the beauty of nonfiction. Almost all of them have similar nonfiction text structures. So students can use a book of their choosing and we can still discuss things like the central ideas, new vocabulary words, or the author’s purpose. And. . . when students have different books, allowing them to share examples provides a variety of examples for the entire class.

Small Group Teaching for Individual Needs

When I teach a new nonfiction reading strategy I will often do this through small groups. Understanding that each learner possesses distinct abilities and preferences, I implement strategy groups. These small groups provide a personalized approach that tailors instruction to individual needs. I can introduce the reading strategy that best supports students where they are without frustrating them with something that is too advanced or boring them with a strategy that is too easy. This ensures that every student receives the specific support they require to improve their comprehension strategies and thrive in their nonfiction reading journey. These reading minilessons become the foundation of solid reading comprehension skills.

One group might be learning to recognize different text features, while another is working on identifying the main idea of a text. It’s focused instruction at just the right pace and level for each learner.

Independent Reading Time

I love to introduce choice boards for students to use during independent reading time. This is simply a list of activities that help them grow their nonfiction reading skills. During this independent practice, students get to choose which activity they want to complete.

Many of the activities I include are similar to ones we would do together if we were doing a close reading of a text. For example, I have students read and focus on new words. They are asked to write down words that they don’t know so that we can use them later. Another activity might include asking students to create their own picture and caption that could be added to their book.

Choice boards are dynamic tools that cater to varied learning styles. These boards offer students options aligned with their preferences and strengths. In the realm of choice boards, students are empowered to take ownership of their learning, selecting activities that resonate with their individual styles.

As I witness groups and choice boards in action, my classroom transforms into a space where nonfiction reading becomes an inclusive and personalized experience.

Don’t Shy Away From Nonfiction Picture Books

When incorporating informational text into your lesson plans don’t overlook nonfiction picture books. Just because the words in a book have been simplified doesn’t mean the key concepts have been. There’s no rule stating that technical language is a requirement for nonfiction texts.

A lot of times I will begin with picture books because I know they are filled with vivid graphics and the words match the phonics skills my students have. This approach offers students exposure to the richness of informational text. They embark on a journey of exploration, learning new skills, or becoming inspired based on someone else’s life. Your students become equipped with applicable knowledge, which leads them to become enthusiastic about their learning.

Some of my favorite books to use when introducing nonfiction reading are the Step Into Reading Books like Eat My Dust! Henry Ford’s First Race.

One way I expose my students to informational texts is through biographies like this one. There are lots of wonderful biographies that fall into the picture book category.

My students love learning about historical figures from decades ago up to the present day! As we dive into this nonfiction genre we not only learn about people, but we have lots of opportunities to practice nonfiction reading comprehension strategies. Students learn to identify important points in the person’s life and ask good questions about why the person did or did not do something.

For more information on teaching biographies check out 4 Fun Ways to Teach Biographies to add some fresh ideas to your lessons.

Improve Nonfiction Reading Comprehension with Graphic Organizers

If there is one thing that can get overwhelming to students with nonfiction text, it is the facts. While most students find it easy to remember a storyline, trying to remember all.the.facts is something completely different. That’s why I teach my kids about graphic organizers.

What I have found working with my students is that graphic organizers are one of the most powerful tools we can give to our students. There are so many things vying for our students’ attention that it can be difficult for them to keep track of the information they are reading. Plus, they are visual tools that transform their approach to nonfiction reading by highlighting the key information. After all, they should be reading a nonfiction text differently than a fiction one.

Graphic organizers become a tool that helps students identify main ideas, unveil supporting details, and decipher complex text structures and features. As young students dive into the world of graphic organizers, comprehension becomes a breeze. Even as they begin to read longer texts, the graphic organizer becomes a tool they can use again and again.

Try these Graphic Organizers in Your Classroom!

Sticky Notes to the Rescue

In my teaching journey, I’ve found a simple yet effective nonfiction reading comprehension tool. I equip my students with sticky notes. In fact, students keep them in their book boxes so they are readily available. You will also find extra sticky notes in the classroom library too. These unassuming tools transform the reading experience into a nonfiction knowledge quest.

As students are reading, I encourage them to jot down important details, questions that spark their curiosity, keywords they might not understand, or reflections that arise as they read their text. Later, we use their sticky notes as a way to review and practice the nonfiction reading comprehension strategies we have learned.

After our independent reading time, we take a few minutes to do a debrief. This is when students can share what they wrote on their sticky notes. If they share a reflection, we talk about the reading strategies they used. If they have a question or an unknown word we talk about the reading strategy they could use to resolve the question. It allows us to practice and review many different strategies at one time.

Using sticky notes as a tool allows students to jot down thoughts and questions and then move on with their reading. I encourage students to write the page number on their sticky notes and stick them to the page of the book that the note relates to. Students know that they will always be able to come back to the sticky note later. This strategy promotes active thinking while reading, something I want my students to be doing.

The Magic of Nonfiction Text Features

Have you ever asked a question about something found in a caption or heading only to have students flabbergasted because they can’t find the answer? I don’t know what it is, but so many students just ignore any text that is not part of the main paragraphs.

That’s why I love to introduce all the different text features as “cheats” they can use along the way. In reality, there is no cheating involved, just smart reading. But when students find out that nonfiction texts have some special features designed to make reading them and understanding the information easier, they are all in.

I guide them through the intricate landscape of page numbers, headings, and bolded key terms. We dive into pictures, illustrations, and captions too. Don’t forget the valuable information that can be found in the table of contents, index, and glossary. We also talk about bold print, headings, and highlighted words.

I also emphasize the importance of navigating with the table of contents. This is a strategy that I consider the best way to approach these enriching books. I always start off with a scenario about traveling and how that experience can change whether you have a map or not. I connect the scenario to how the table of contents becomes their trusty roadmap. It will guide them through their nonfiction text in an organized and efficient manner.

Nonfiction Text Feature Scavenger Hunt

Once I introduce these features I set students off on a nonfiction text feature scavenger hunt. It’s so easy to do too! Each student gets a nonfiction book and I call out a text feature. Then off they go hunting through their book to find it. We share examples before moving on to the next one. It’s a fun-filled time of book exploration while reinforcing the importance of the text features.

Differentiated literacy centers. There I said it. Did your heart start racing? Are you sweating because the thought just overwhelms you? Don’t panic! Let’s talk about differentiated literacy centers and the importance of incorporating them into our classrooms so they don’t feel so daunting and overwhelming.

What are differentiated literacy centers?

To first understand what differentiated learning centers are, we need to define differentiation. Differentiation is meeting the needs of individual students, through the approach or method of learning. Simply put, not all students learn at the same pace or in the same way.

So, differentiated literacy centers are defined as creating activities to meet the needs of your students during the literacy center stations. This will allow students to be challenged at his/her own level and to develop a sense of achievement.

Are you new to differentiation? Or need a refresher of info? Grab my FREE complete guide to differentiation to learn more!

But why do I need to differentiate literacy centers?

Many of you are already working differentiation into your small groups by the instructional materials that you choose. These lesson materials are selected based on informal or formal assessments students have taken. Even with whole group instruction, we scaffold our instruction to meet the needs of students or use question stems to vary the level of questions asked to the class.

The question comes up, why do we need to differentiate in our centers then? Well, because it’s the right thing to do. It’s part of our instructional day. Often times it’s part of multiple instructional days. Differentiation allows for additional meaningful practice at his/her own level.

What are the 3 most important factors of literacy centers?

1. Leveled Reading/Writing activities

2. Monitoring student participation – holding students accountable

3. Routine, routine, routine

We will go over each one more in-depth below.

How do you differentiate literacy centers?

Let’s start with reading and writing activities. First, let me remind you that some stations are naturally differentiated for your students. For example, writing – some will write letter strings, while others will put together one or two sentences or even a paragraph! Or if you have district testing, there may be a reteaching component offered to each child that allows them to work on activities that they struggled with on the testing. We use IXL and Study Island in our district to differentiate digital classwork. These are examples of items that you may be doing already to differentiate and not directly aware that it is differentiation.

Here are some examples of differentiating literacy centers:

1. Create different levels of materials for instruction.

I usually create 3 levels for my students. For instance, if I am working on blends:

Below level: work on L blends only

On level: work on all blends at the beginning of the word

Above level: work on blends at the beginning or end of the word

OR

Below level: match blend words to pictures

On level: Incorporate the word into a sentence

Above level: create a new blend word

2. Use flexible grouping –

You may have your below-level group work with a teacher or in pairs. Your on-level and above-level group may be working independently to complete the task at hand.

3. Scaffold support –

Scaffolding support means offering various levels of support to your students. In a writing station, your below-level group you could offer a picture word bank, use fewer words, or provide sentence starters.

On-level students may only require a word bank of multiple words to stimulate ideas for writing, and your above-level kids are good to go writing their next best novel and look forward to using an editing checklist.

Just remember: There are multiple ways that you can differentiate for students!

How to manage it all?

Monitoring student participation and creating a routine both fall under management. How do the students know what to do and what to expect during literacy stations? Here are some tips:

Hold students accountable for their work

Students should be responsible for turning in some kind of checklist to you so that you know they completed all the stations. If it’s a product the student would need to turn in, I would expect the child to place their work into a bin and check that off on their sheet. If they are doing a computer activity, I would have them write the score they received at the end of the activity on the checklist sheet. If it’s a partner game, I would have them write the name of the winner on the sheet. Then finally, whether they finished all the activities or not, place the checklist into a bin for review.

Set clear expectations

Explain each center to the students. They need to know EXACTLY what to need to do at each center, how long they have, and what the work outcome should be. Ideally, you would have practiced most station activities as a whole group before ever implementing stations. For example, students should already know how to log in to IXL and find the activity that has been assigned to them. But for center work, where the content may change, an explanation will be beneficial. For my below-level group, I will usually assign one of my above-level students to read the directions again to those struggling students and then proceed to their assigned group.

Establish those routines

Students need to know when to move from one center to another, where to go next after one center is completed, what work to work on when they get to that center, how to clean up the area for the next group, where to place completed work and what to do if they get stuck. This takes many weeks of practice BEFORE I even think about pulling small groups for myself. I like to use colored folders for each of my three groups. That way, the students know exactly what folder to grab for the work and what color bin to put their work in when completed. See the example below. Easy peasy!

Monitor student progress

How will you monitor the students and their success? How will you decide what groups students will be in? How will you check if the work is accurate and complete? How will you decide if students can transition to another group? Have answers to all these questions BEFORE you start. I use these checklists to monitor student progress.

Here is what my differentiated centers typically look like when we are ready to roll:

1. Small group with the teacher – differentiated lessons usually from reading series

2. Writing center – naturally differentiated

3. Tech center – using BOOM learning to differentiate, IXL, or Study island

4. Independent work – Differentiated centers

5. SSR – Sustained silent reading/AR – differentiated levels in our district for student choice reading

If I’m lucky and my schedule allows, this would be the time I would select for my pull-out students to leave and work on their reading skills with our reading specialist, and/or if I have an assistant, they will also pull a small group of students to work on with a group.

That’s potentially 7 DIFFERENT STATIONS in my classroom all working on DIFFERENTIATED literacy instruction!!! That’s AMAZING and…..if you noticed, there’s not a lot of classwork that needs to be graded. Literacy stations are NOT meant to be busy work!

Teaching main idea to your students doesn’t have to be a challenging or frustrating experience. With a little creative thinking and a few fun activities, your students will be on their way to mastering this important reading comprehension skill. We all know that learning to find the main idea is a concept that can be difficult for students to grasp. Over the years I’ve found some activities that have really helped my students and I’m excited to share those with you. Here’s 5 of my favorite engaging activities for teaching main idea.

5 Engaging Ways To Teach Main Idea

Over the years I’ve tried a lot of different activities and resources for teaching main idea. Some worked well and some . . . well, not so much. So I thought I’d share with you my favorite activities so you can focus your time and energy there and hopefully avoid the activities that didn’t work.

Like most concepts for our young students, it is important to begin with concrete activities that students can connect to in order to learn these important thinking skills.

Teaching a thinking process can be difficult and abstract. So start with the concrete and slowly move to more abstract activities. And make sure to build in lots of practice time. After all, repetition is the key to learning.

1. Main Idea Bag

This is such a fun hands-on activity and a really great way to introduce the concept of main idea to students. The first time we do the main idea bags, I prepare the bags. In each bag I put three items that are related by their theme or activity. There is nothing on the bag to indicate what is inside or how the contents of the bag relate. That’s up to the students to figure out.

We start by grabbing the first bag and pulling the items out one at a time. Each time I pull out an item, the students tell me what it is. Then I set the item up at the front of the room so everyone can see. We do this for each of the items. Once all three items I have been pulled out I ask the students some questions:

What do these items have in common?

What activity could I do with all of these items?

What do you think the Main Idea of this bag is?

Those guiding questions are really important because they teach the students some of the thinking steps that will lead them to the main idea. We repeat this activity with another bag and the kids can’t wait to find out what is inside.

Once I feel like the students have a good grasp on the activity, we divide up into small groups and each group gets a bag. I usually prepare 6-8 bags total for this activity. That gives us 1-2 bags to do together as a class and the remaining bags to use as guided practice.

Each small group will go through the same process on their own. After they are done they put everything back in the bag and the group gets a new bag. The students love trying to figure out the main idea of each bag and they get really quiet and secretive so they don’t give away answers to other groups.

Then I issue the BIG ASSIGNMENT and the kids usually cheer! Each student is tasked with creating their own main idea bag at home. They creating their own bags and sharing them with the class. Having students create their own main idea bag is a great way for students to connect objects together using critical thinking strategies to determine how they are related.

This activity is loved so much that I’ve been known to repeat it at different times in the year. Depending on when we are doing this activity, I like to make the items in the bag correlate to a holiday, season, or classroom theme. If I am doing this activity in the spring, I may fill my bag with items such as flowers, a trowel, flower seeds, or a plastic baggie of soil.

2. The Main Idea Hand

Once students have an understanding of how to determine the main idea, it is time to add in the concept of supporting details. There are many different visuals you can use for this. One of my favorite is the Main Idea Hand. The Main Idea Hand is a graphic organizer that stays with students forever!

I start the activity by asking students to trace their hands on a colorful piece of construction paper and cut them out. Many times I don’t even tell them why we are doing this. This gets them really curious and they can’t wait to find out what the hand is for.

I let the students know that the hand, be it on paper or the one attached to their body, can be a great help when determining the main idea and supporting details.

I have all the students look at their hand – the physical one. I have them draw a circle on their palm and I tell them that this is the main idea. It’s the part that holds the rest of the hand together. Everything that connects to the palm of the hand has to relate to the hand.

To make my point, I get a little silly. I ask my students, “Who has a toe connected to their hand? What about an eyeball or an ear?” Nope! That’s because those things don’t relate to the palm of the hand. I like to remind them about the main idea bags and how each item related to each other.

Then we talk about how it is the details that actually lead to the main idea. I tell the students that each finger is a detail. To check the main idea we look at the details to see if they support the main idea. As we walk through some examples in class I like to hold my hand out to the class and touch each finger while saying the detail. Then I ask the students if it relates to or supports the main idea. If the answer is yes, I fold that finger in towards my palm. By doing this I create a thumbs up visual at the end that students can use as a check. No thumbs up? Not the main idea. Fingers still sticking out? Not supporting details.

What has been great about this activity is that I have seen students use it again and again as they work independently on reading comprehension activities. There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing a student touch their palm and fold their fingers in while doing a reading passage. What that tells me is that I’ve taught them a strategy that they remember and can use. I’ve even had a teacher from a higher grade level come and ask me about the hand after having some of my old students use it in her class.

Once we have learned about the main idea hand, we use that construction paper hand to create a visual reminder. Students will label the palm of the hand (main idea) and the fingers (supporting details). When we are done we add them to our reading notebooks.

This visual also goes up in our classroom on our reading strategies wall. It’s a constant reminder of tools students have learned to help them be successful with reading comprehension.

3. Main Idea and Mentor Texts

Even BEFORE I introduce main idea into the classroom, like many skills, I love using mentor texts. Not only do students get engrossed in read alouds, but it offers multiple opportunities to model reading and thinking skills. Here are some of my favorite books to use as mentor texts for teaching main idea.

A Bad Case Of Stripes by David Shannon

After The Fall by Dan Santat

Animals Nobody Loves by Seymour Simon

Each of these books provides not only a great story, but also a unique opportunity to talk about main idea in a longer text. This is a great way to introduce main idea early in the year before you even begin studying it because then they will be familiar with the language.

For older students, the main idea is often the title of the chapters. So read a few chapters out loud and see if your students can come up with the main idea of each part!

4. Practice, Practice, Practice

By now, students are generally ready to start applying the idea of main idea and supporting details to text. Like any skill, we always start together and I model the thinking and actions as we complete an activity. Sometimes this takes 1 passage on 1 day, and other times it takes a week of guided practice. It’s really important to trust your teacher gut and do what your students need. Don’t rush the process of moving them to independence too quickly. It will pay off in the long run.

If most of your class is ready to work independently, then I add this skill to my small group reading instruction. This way I can continue to work with those students that need a little extra guided practice without holding up the entire class.

Here’s some of my favorite main idea and supporting detail practice activities. All of these have been used and approved by students!

A-Z Animals: Reading Passages For Main Idea And Supporting Details

If there is one thing that kids everywhere love it is animals. So it seemed like a no-brainer to use animals to engage students in this important skills practice. These non-fiction passages are designed to be used specifically for finding the main idea and supporting details. So often this skill gets lumped in with a large reading passage and one question on main idea. In my experience this is just not enough. These skill-specific passages really help students master identifying the main idea and supporting details.

After reading the short passage, students are guided through the thinking process by first starting with the topic. This is the easiest thing for students to identify. Next, we talk about what the passage is mostly about. Before we write anything down, we look to see if we can find details in the passage to support our main idea hypothesis. I like to have students underline or highlight their passages so they can visually see the key sentences in the passage.

Once identifying those details, we add them into the boxes at the bottom of the page. Then we go back to our main idea hypothesis so we can check it. During guided practice I will often hold my hand as we check our idea. If we end up with a thumbs up, we write our main idea into the box.

Over the next few days we will do more daily practice with main idea and supporting details. Once I feel like students are doing well with the concept, we continue to practice, but the activities are moved into centers, morning work and homework.

Finding the main idea while learning fun facts about some of our favorite animals is a great way to engage students in this skill. Each A-Z Animal Reading Passage includes two options for completing the activity. One option includes a multiple choice question and answers section for students to choose the main idea and supporting details. The second option includes the passage and sections for students to write the topic, main idea, and three supporting details from the passage. This makes scaffolding instruction and differentiating quick and easy.

This NO PREP activity is a fantastic resource for me to use with my students because I can assign them a deck to use during independent learning time or literacy centers.

I use the Main Idea and Supporting Details Boom Cards to give some differentiated practice to my students. I love that these main idea activities continue to build student thinking skills for this reading concept. These Boom Card activities have students finding the main idea and supporting details in different ways. One variation asks students to read a paragraph and choose the correct sentence for the topic sentence from a list below the passage. The second variation asks students to read a paragraph and choose which sentence does NOT belong in the paragraph as a supporting detail. This is a great way for students to think about the paragraph as a whole and not in isolation.

The Main Idea and Supporting Details Boom Cards are a great way to help students review what they have learned or give extra practice to those students who need it. They make a great reading center and a great way to engage students with technology.

5. Connecting Main Idea to Writing

The final step in our main idea journey is connecting the idea of main idea and supporting details to writing. Once students have a good understanding of this concept they are then able to begin applying it in their writing. By the time we get to this point it’s like we’ve come full circle!

The Hamburger Paragraph Model is my absolute favorite and most effective way to teach paragraph writing! It is such a wonderful visual way to teach students how the pieces make the whole and it connects very easily to the idea of main idea and supporting details. It’s easy for students to see how everything will come together in the end to make the most effective paragraph possible.

When we use the parts of a hamburger to visualize the main idea, supporting details, and concluding sentences, our students are able to visually see how it all makes sense. Guiding my students through the process of creating the Hamburger Model has been a super successful approach to connecting main idea to writing.
