As the end of the school year approaches, I know how tricky it can be to keep students focused. The excitement of summer break is real. Attention spans are running on empty. Instead of counting down the days, I like to lean into the energy and make these final weeks meaningful. Whether it’s hands-on activities, brain breaks, or giving our students more student choice, there are so many fun ways to keep learning going strong. Today, I’m sharing my favorite strategies for keeping students engaged at the end of the year while making it fun for everyone!

Why Keeping Students Engaged at the End of the Year Matters

I get it. By the end of the year, everyone is exhausted. The school year draws to a close, summer is calling, and it feels like a battle just to get our students to stay focused. These last weeks of school are more than just a countdown. They’re a great time to reinforce learning, celebrate growth, and set the stage for the next grade level.

When we keep our students engaged, we’re not just keeping them busy; we’re helping them finish strong. The goal is to make these last days meaningful. Even a small change of pace can keep our students’ attention and make them feel like their hard work all year long matters.

So, let’s lean into intentional strategies that make learning exciting, even when we’re at the finish line. Trust me. When our students stay engaged, those very last days feel more rewarding for everyone!

Keeping Students Engaged at the End of the Year With Intentional Activities

The end of the school year doesn’t have to be a struggle to keep our students focused. In fact, it’s the perfect time to shake things up and bring in fun activities that still reinforce learning. There are many ways to make sure students stay excited and involved.

I’ve put together nine easy ideas for keeping our students engaged at the end of the year. Each one is designed to add energy, purpose, and a little bit of fun to these last weeks of school. From interactive activities to small group work and even letting students take on the role of teacher, these strategies will help everyone finish the year strong. Let’s get started!

1. Task Cards to the Rescue

What’s the easiest way to keep your students on task? Get them out of their seats! That’s what I love about keeping my students engaged at the end of the year with task cards. They work well for a SCOOT game, where students rotate around the room answering different questions. You can even use them as a scavenger hunt, where they search for and solve task cards hidden around the classroom. I’ve even used them in an escape room format, where my students work in small groups to solve a set of context clue challenges before moving on to the next step. These activities keep them thinking while giving them a fun way to stay focused during the last couple of weeks of school.

I also love to use task cards as the question cards for board games. When it comes to playing a review game, the hardest part is coming up with questions! Instead of racking your brain to create new questions, grab a set of task cards with the skills you want students to practice. You can use them with a mainstream board game or a custom-made game. It’s an easy way to keep students excited and learning. In my TPT store, you will find lots of task card resources on a variety of skills and concepts.

Another great way to use task cards is to encourage student leaders. If a student has a strong grasp on context clues, they can take turns guiding their classmates through the cards, acting as a “teacher” for the day. More on this below! This simple shift helps with keeping students engaged at the end of the year because it gives them ownership of their learning. It also lets them take pride in what they’ve mastered.

There are so many creative ways to use task cards in the classroom.
2. Cross-Curricular Learning With STEM

By the last weeks of school, I love pulling together cross-curricular activities that combine reading, writing, math, science, and art. Whether it’s STEM challenges, a math craft, or a fun project that ties subjects together, these activities help our students see the real-world connections in what they’ve learned all year. It’s an easy way to keep engagement high while wrapping up the year with meaningful learning.

One of my favorite resources for keeping students engaged at the end of the year is this Spring STEM pack. It includes four hands-on STEM activities that encourage creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. Each challenge comes with planning, recording, and reflection sheets, so our students are thinking critically about their process from start to finish.

I love how STEM challenges bring together so many different subject areas. Science blends with math concepts, engineering connects to real-world problem-solving, and writing ties it all together with reflections. These activities allow our students to work in small groups, share ideas, and build confidence in their design thinking. Plus, they’re a fun way to embrace the warmer weather by taking some of the activities outdoors when possible!

If you’re looking for an easy idea to boost engagement while making the most of these final days, check out this Easy STEM Activity blog post, where you can grab a free STEM activity to use with your students!

3. Make Learning Visible With Interactive Displays

One of my favorite ways to keep students engaged at the end of the year is by giving them the chance to showcase their learning in real time. By this time of year, our students have worked hard mastering different skills. Seeing their progress displayed builds confidence and keeps students’ attention. I love using interactive displays where my students add their names when they find specific skills in their work. If they spot a caption in a nonfiction book, they write their name on the caption poster. If they notice a contraction, they add it to the contraction chart. This turns skill review into a class-wide challenge that encourages friendly competition while reinforcing what they’ve learned throughout the year.

This is a fun way to keep students engaged because it takes the skills they have learned and puts them into the real world. Instead of knowing that they are learning about contractions, they are tapping into what they previously learned and recalling it. I love how adaptable this idea is. My students can identify figurative language, types of angles, or sentence structures, making it an easy way to reinforce skills across the curriculum. Since our students naturally love seeing their names displayed, this strategy works well for different learning styles.

Since the very end of the school year is a great time for reflection, I love tying this activity into a memory book or student survey. This creates a space for our students to write about their biggest growth moments. Whether used during the last weeks of school or even on the very last day, this interactive display helps our students see their hard work in action. It’s about celebrating progress before they move on to the next grade level!

4. Use Digital Activities to Engage Your Students

I love using digital activities as a way to change things up at the end of the year. When attention spans start to dwindle and the excitement of summer break kicks in, digital activities offer a fun way to reinforce skills while keeping things interactive. Whether it’s BOOM Cards for instant feedback or Google Slides for hands-on learning, digital resources make learning feel fresh. They also take the pressure off us because they’re low prep and easy to implement. This gives us more time to focus on guiding our students instead of managing endless stacks of papers.

Digital resources also work well when I need a quick, engaging activity to reward hard work. I’ll often use BOOM Cards as a little reward that still reinforces learning. These self-checking, game-like cards keep our students’ attention while providing instant feedback. They’re a great way to squeeze in extra practice without our students even realizing they’re reviewing. To learn more about how I use BOOM Cards, check out why they’ve become my go-to digital tools!

5. Boost Engagement With Student Choice

By the very end of the school year, giving our students some control over their work can be a game-changer. At this time of year, our students are craving a little more freedom. Incorporating student choice makes learning feel less like a chore. I love using math centers, spelling activities, task cards, and digital activities where my students pick how they complete an assignment. If there are 24 questions, they only have to do 12. They get to pick which ones! This simple shift gives them a sense of ownership over their learning. It also ensures they get the academic practice they need before moving on to the next grade level.

Another great way to build student choice into the last weeks of school is through themed days or project-based learning. Letting students decide between different subject areas, like writing a personal narrative, researching a science topic, or creating a math-based design challenge, helps them stay engaged while reinforcing real-world connections. No matter how it’s incorporated, student choice is an easy way to increase engagement while giving them a little reward for all their hard work throughout the academic year.

6. Make Learning Fun With Interactive Responses

Sometimes, the best student engagement strategies are the simplest. Instead of calling on my students in the usual way, I turn responses into a movement game. If the answer is A, they touch their nose. If it’s B, they touch the floor! This adds an element of friendly competition while making sure everyone is actively participating. These fun activities keep energy levels high and encourage our students to stay focused and engaged.

This strategy is especially effective for our younger students who need movement while they learn. Even older students appreciate a change of pace in their routine. I’ve also used this technique in small groups or during digital activities. My students respond by clicking or dragging their answers instead of simply writing them down. These simple ways to increase student engagement make a huge difference, especially as our students start to feel the pull of summer vacation. Keeping things interactive and exciting is the best way to help our students stay focused and learning.

7. Differentiate to Meet All Skill Levels

If there’s one thing I feel strongly about, it’s differentiation. Every class has students at different skill levels. When we ignore this and teach to the average, we create learning gaps. Differentiation is the easiest way to avoid this. Sometimes we have students working on different skills, while other times it is the same skill at a different level. Whether it’s tweaking an assignment so our students can work at their own pace or providing multiple ways to practice a skill, differentiation helps keep students engaged at the end of the year, no matter where they are in their learning journey.

One of my favorite ways to do this is through color by number math activities. They provide an engaging mix of problem-solving and creativity. Since I believe so strongly in differentiation, I try to make it easy for you to put it into practice by providing you with differentiated options in my resources. For example, in my Place Value Color by Number resource, I included six differentiated puzzles that reinforce essential math skills. Your students solve place value problems, match their answers to a color key, and complete a mystery picture as they go. This activity works well for small groups, independent practice, or even as a little reward after a long lesson. Our students at different skill levels can work on a version that’s just right for them. No one feels frustrated or left behind. Plus, it’s an easy way to keep our students engaged while reviewing core concepts in a fun, hands-on way.

8. Let Students Take the Lead as Student Teacher

By the last couple weeks of school, our students know more than they realize! That’s why I love having a student teacher lead part of a lesson. When a student truly understands a concept, giving them the opportunity to teach their classmates builds confidence, leadership skills, and deeper understanding. I’ve found that when my students explain a skill in their own words, they often come up with explanations that resonate better with their peers. Sometimes, another student’s perspective is exactly what someone struggling with the concept needs to hear!

This is a fun way to keep students engaged while reinforcing their learning. I like to choose a few student leaders each day to explain a math strategy, vocabulary word, or science concept we’ve been working on. For my students who might be a little shy, I let them work in small groups to prepare their explanations. Even a quick two-minute lesson from a student teacher can make a big impact on how well the rest of the class grasps the material.

9. Hands-On Activities

One of the best ways I know to keep students engaged and learning at the end of the year is through hands-on learning. This might look like interactive games or center activities, or it might be adding a craft to a review activity.

I love using math crafts throughout the school year. They are a nice break from our typical practice activities. This Spring Math Craft is perfect for the end of the school year. It is a great way to review the basic operations through hands-on learning.

These types of hands-on activities are a great way to make the last couple weeks of school more exciting while reinforcing everything our students have worked on throughout the academic year.

Make the End of the Year Count

As the end of the school year approaches, finding ways to keep learning meaningful and exciting makes all the difference. Keeping students engaged at the end of the year isn’t just about filling time. It’s about celebrating their growth, reinforcing skills, and making sure they finish strong. There are so many ways to keep our students’ attention while still making learning fun. The last weeks of school should be a time of reflection, connection, and confidence-building. It gives our students the chance to show what they’ve learned while getting excited for the next grade level. With the right fun activities, we can turn these final days into something memorable and meaningful. We can ensure that every student crosses the finish line feeling successful.

Save for Later

Remember to save this post for quick access to these resources for keeping students engaged at the end of the year!

There’s something truly magical about watching our students light up when they recognize how far they’ve come. Celebrating student progress in elementary school isn’t just a fun activity. It’s a great way to build confidence, encourage a growth mindset, and create a positive classroom culture where every child feels valued. Today, we are exploring some of my favorite ways to recognize and cheer on students’ successes in meaningful and lasting ways.

Certificates & Awards to Highlight Student Achievement

One of the best ways to celebrate student progress in elementary school is with certificates and awards. Whether it’s an end of the year celebration or a monthly check-in, giving our students something tangible to honor their academic achievements is always a big deal. I love using award ceremonies to spotlight everything from academic excellence to personal growth, making sure every student has a moment to shine.

You can make this extra special by matching the certificates to your classroom theme or adding a playful touch, like a craft or small treat to go along with the awards. For example, you might use certificates to recognize academic achievements, kindness, effort, or other milestones. Certificates are a meaningful way to provide positive reinforcement and give your students something they can proudly bring home to share with their family members. It’s truly heartwarming to see your students light up with pride as they show off their awards to classmates, teachers, and even visiting community members.

Including a math memory book or science classroom achievements in these awards can cover a range of subjects and encourage critical thinking. For those in special education, celebrating even small steps forward can have a lasting impact. It reminds our individual students that they’re moving in the right direction.

Positive Notes Home: Phone Call or Handwritten Note

Another one of my favorite ways to celebrate student progress in elementary is by sending positive notes home. A quick phone call or a handwritten note can mean the world to a struggling student or their family members. It’s a wonderful classroom management tool that boosts student motivation and helps create a sense of community.

Positive feedback can highlight a student’s specific positive trait or hard work during the learning process. Whether it’s on sticky notes or beautifully designed note cards, the message of “good job” or “great work” sticks with your students. It motivates them to keep going. It’s also an opportunity to engage your families and let them be part of their child’s progress.

This kind of communication supports student success, not just academically but emotionally. It strengthens the bridge between school and home, showing that you notice and appreciate individual students’ own goals and personal growth.

Displaying Student Work on the Bulletin Board

A simple way to celebrate student progress in elementary is to display student work on a classroom bulletin board. This turns the classroom into a living gallery of student learning and achievement. Showcasing student work publicly gives your kiddos a sense of pride and shows that their efforts are valued.

Whether it’s creative writing, artwork, or a math project, putting it up for everyone to see reinforces the idea that hard work matters. It’s also a fun activity for your students to walk by and admire not only their own work but the work of their peers. This fosters a sense of community. Plus, visitors, family members, and even other grade level classes can admire your students’ successes.

For an added boost, have students fill out personal goal-setting sheets and display those somewhere in your classroom as well. This will demonstrate how students have progressed and enable them to check in on the goals they are achieving. It’s a motivating full look at their academic journey and helps highlight both the product and the learning process.

Class Rewards to Build a Positive Classroom Culture

Class rewards are another favorite way for celebrating student progress in elementary because they bring the whole class together. Things like reward coupons or even a class goal party offer positive reinforcement for group achievements. They help your students work toward a common goal and give everyone something exciting to look forward to.

Class rewards also provide an opportunity to encourage teamwork. For example, completing reward posters shows that the whole class’s efforts matter. As pieces are added to the poster, you’ll boost engagement and excitement to work hard! It’s a visual reminder that motivates and encourages positive behavior and teamwork.

Including student input in choosing rewards can further build a sense of community. It’s one of the best ways to promote inclusion and respect in your classroom, no matter the grade level.

Show and Tell: Sharing Best Work of the Quarter

Show and tell isn’t just for the beginning of the year. It’s a fantastic celebration tool throughout the entire year! Letting your students share their best work of the quarter helps them reflect on their own goals and achievements. It’s also a great way to help your kids practice verbal praise and speaking skills in front of their peers as they share all about themselves.

Whether it’s sharing a project from the science classroom or a personal piece from a writing portfolio, your students will love the spotlight. This also gives you a chance to highlight critical thinking and creativity, which boosts student learning across subjects. Add a pep talk from you before the session. You’ll watch even your most reserved kiddos step out of their comfort zone.

This type of student achievement celebration creates role models in your classroom. It shows peers what’s possible when they put in the effort. It’s the perfect blend of positive reinforcement and student motivation.

Student Folders to Track Growth Over Time

Student folders are one of the most practical and meaningful ways to celebrate student progress in elementary. These folders, sometimes called portfolios, allow your kids to track their own growth throughout the school year and beyond. They can include goal sheets, samples of student work, and even notes about personal goals.

These folders are an excellent tool for goal setting. They help your students see where they started, where they are now, and what’s next. It’s a reflection of their learning process. It shows both academic achievements and moments of personal growth. Plus, at the end of the year, these folders become a wonderful keepsake to share with family members.

Including a reflection piece can round out the picture of student progress. It’s all about giving our students a full look at their accomplishments across subjects and settings.

Celebration Tunnels for Big Milestones

A “celebration tunnel” is such a fun activity for celebrating student progress in elementary school

Gather the whole class or small groups to form a tunnel with their arms. Then, have your kids walk through as everyone cheers them on. It’s a simple but powerful way to celebrate academic excellence or a big personal win.

This kind of celebration creates a sense of pride, encourages a growth mindset, and reinforces that hard work pays off. It’s especially powerful for your struggling students who’ve made big strides. It shows them that their efforts are recognized and valued.

You can even invite community members or family members to join in on a special day. This makes it an end-of-year or end-of-quarter celebration they’ll never forget. It’s moments like these that leave a lasting impact on our students’ mental health and motivation.

Goal Setting and Reflection Activities

Goal setting is a cornerstone of student learning and one of the best ways to celebrate student progress in elementary school. You can help your students reflect on their own goals, set new ones, and track their progress. Whether you use goal tracking sheets, charts, or reflection pages, you’re giving your students ownership over their academic journey.

Reflection activities encourage your kids to think critically about their progress, identify strengths, and pinpoint areas for improvement. It’s a great way to build a positive classroom culture that values personal growth as much as academic achievements.

These activities work beautifully in small groups or with individual students. Reflecting gives everyone the chance to celebrate their progress in a way that’s meaningful to them. Plus, it sets the stage for lifelong skills like resilience and perseverance.

Peer Shout-Outs and Kind Words

Sometimes the best celebration comes from classmates! Incorporating peer shout-outs or kind words sessions is a wonderful way to celebrate student progress in elementary school. Give your students time to share verbal praise and positive feedback about their classmates’ good work or specific positive traits.

You can make this a regular part of your routine. Maybe at the end of the day or the end of the week, you take a few minutes to build a sense of community and boost student motivation. Using sticky notes or a class bulletin board to post these shout-outs adds a visual layer of encouragement.

This simple celebration has a long way in creating a positive classroom culture where your students cheer each other on. It’s a beautiful reminder that learning is a team effort, and everyone’s achievements matter.

Celebrating Student Progress Quarterly

Each quarter is the perfect time for celebrating student progress in elementary school. You can host a mini awards ceremony, display recent student work, share favorite moments from the past months, and maybe even have a classroom dance party or fun-themed event!

A quarterly celebration gives your students a fresh look at their ongoing growth and achievements. It reinforces the idea that their hard work is noticed and appreciated. It’s also a great way to invite family members and community members to join in, creating an even stronger sense of community.

Remember, celebrating students’ progress isn’t just about the academic side. It’s about personal growth, relationships, and the confidence they’ll carry with them into middle school, high school, and beyond. It’s about making them feel like a big deal, because they truly are!

As teachers, we know that the more engaged our students are in the lesson, the more learning happens and solidifies. That makes engagement a BIG part of what we do in the classroom. I don’t know about you, but I am tired of feeling like I have to put on a big production just to get students engaged. I decided to spend some time digging into what engaged my students so that I could use more of that. Over time, I’ve found 9 effective strategies for increasing student engagement. And. . . none of them involve a song and dance!

We are all familiar with the excitement and pride we have on the days it feels like we have every student engaged in some way. You caught their attention from the start, and they are actively working on the activities. Plus, the skills and concepts are clicking. That’s a great day in any classroom.

On the flip side, what can you do when engagement seems to be waning? I have nine effective strategies for increasing student engagement that you can pull out anytime you need to pump up the engagement levels!

Strategy #1: Get Students Up and Moving with Task Cards

I look for any opportunity to get my students up and moving around the classroom. I can remember when I was a student, and constantly being concerned about the time because I was ready to move!

My students know that when a new topic or concept is being introduced that they will be sitting. However, they know that I like to move as much as they do, so they also know partnering up or moving around will soon follow the whole class lesson.

When it’s time to practice, one of my favorite ways to have my students move around the room is by using task cards. Task cards can be used in all subject areas and offer great opportunities for adding movement to an activity.

Before our activity, I will have posted the task cards around the room or in the hallway. This will be the basis of our Write the Room or Scavenger Hunt activity. The only other thing I need is the recording sheets and a bin of clipboards set out for the students to easily grab.

Each student moves to a task card to begin the activity. The first thing they do at each task card is to look for the question number on the card. This will correlate with the number on their answer sheet. Then they read the question and answer the question by writing the answer on the recording page.

The order in which the students complete the task cards changes depending on the size of the group. If a small group is working with task cards, I will let them move at their own pace. When they are finished with a card, they can move to another card as long as they have completed each one by the end.

If the whole class is working with the task cards, I will have the movement be more structured. They will have a certain amount of time to work on the task card, and then they will all move clockwise to the next card.

This is just one way to use task cards! There are SO many more ways you can use task cards as a strategy to increase student engagement! You can learn about 24 more ideas on how to use task cards in your classroom that are fun and engaging for your students!

In the Elementary Island TPT Store, I have many sets of task cards for Math, English, and Reading. They all have different levels of difficulty to help differentiate for your students as well!

Strategy #2: Encouraging Student Participation with Posters

Another amazing strategy that increases student engagement is a class Seek and Find Challenge. I started this because I wanted to incorporate a way for my students to always be on the lookout for the things we are learning in their day-to-day lives. Not only does it engage students but they also take ownership of their learning.

The Seek and Find Challenge encourages students to look for things they have learned about in class in the books they are reading, TV shows they are watching, or in other day-to-day activities. Whether in class or at home, students are encouraged to write down what they found and post it on the Seek and Find board.

The first time I tried this with my class we were studying word building with prefixes. One day, during a read aloud we came upon a word with a prefix. I stopped and showed students the word and we discussed how it connected to what we were learning in grammar. When the students realized this was a “real life” example they got really excited. I grabbed a sticky note and wrote down the word, underlining the prefix. Then I stuck the note to our Seek and Find poster.

I told the class that if they came across any words in their books, on a billboard, or even on a TV show, they could write it down and add it to the board. At the end of the week, we shared out our discoveries from the poster. I was truly amazed at not only how excited my students were to connect their learning to their daily lives, but they seemed to have a better understanding of prefixes than before.

This might have been the first Seek and Find Challenge, but it definitely wasn’t the last. Now I use them all of the time. The topic of our Seek & Find board is always changing. Sometimes it is math related, like fractions, and other times it might be vocabulary words from our science unit. Whatever you choose, just know that your students are going to become super detectives.

I love seeing the excitement students have as they add a new note to our poster. I’ve also noticed that they improved their communication skills as they explain their note at the end of the week. Each explanation is almost like a mini-lesson that reviews the skill or concept. The Seek and Find Challenge promotes a sense of ownership in learning and helps students take an active role in their education.

Strategy #3: Did Someone Say Digital?

Another effective strategy for increasing student engagement is using digital activities in the classroom. Like it or not, our students are growing up in a digital age, unlike any generation before them. Their entire lives have included technology. Not to mention that they love it!

Incorporating technology and digital learning activities is a surefire way to increase student engagement. I dig further into all the different benefits of digital activities in the classroom in a previous post. You will find inspiration, well-explained ideas, and a free resource ready to be used in your class today!

A digital resource I enjoy using in my classroom regularly is BOOM Cards. BOOM Cards are digital task cards. They are a fun and interactive way for students to practice and review different topics and skills. The game-like feel of digital activities makes them exciting for students. Students will happily complete 25 questions using BOOM Cards, but if the same 25 questions were on a traditional worksheet the assignment would be met with moans and groans.

You can also use BOOM Cards and other digital activities as a whole-class warm-up at the beginning of class or whole-class practice during a lesson.

Learn more about the benefits of BOOM Cards by reading BOOM Cards in the Classroom! Read all the way to the end for a free deck of BOOM cards to try out in your classroom!

And. . . if you are looking for digital activities, in general, hop on over to check out my digital interactive activities for my Math, Language Arts, and Reading skills resources.

Strategy #4: Student Choice Options

An important and effective strategy for increasing student engagement is allowing students to have a choice in what they can do. When students are interested in what they are doing, there will be an increase in work effort and time management. This might include a choice in the activity they complete or a choice in the topic they learn about.

Students can be given a choice in all subject areas. One way I incorporate it in my subject areas is through a Choice Board or Menu. There are various names for it, but basically, it’s a page with 9 options of different activities students can choose from. Activities will vary in length and type of activity (digital, make a poster, write a comic strip, create a song, etc.) Depending on the goal and length of time students have to complete the activity, they are given a set number of menu activities they need to complete.

These choice boards or menus can be used as part of a class assignment, as extension projects, or as activities for early finishers.

One way I incorporate choice is in our spelling practice. While the goal of each activity remains the same, learn to spell the target words, the activities students can choose from varies. When you need to repeat, repeat, repeat, it’s important to have a variety of activities ready to help keep engagement high amongst your students. I have 12 different spelling activities for them to choose from and students know that they must complete a set number.

Throughout the year, the theme of the activities will change. I find that this helps to bring excitement to these practice activities resulting in higher engagement. My Spelling Choice Activities are no-prep and work with any spelling word list!

Strategy #5: Differentiate, Differentiate, Differentiate

Every learner learns differently! In today’s classroom, differentiation is key to our students’ success. Differentiation is not a crutch. Instead, it allows you to meet your students where they are and encouragingly provides them an opportunity to be successful. You are providing access to a beneficial educational experience with this strategy.

As teachers, our plates are full, and as a result, differentiation can feel like a daunting task. But it doesn’t have to be! To help streamline the process of differentiation in the classroom, I walk you through a series of tips and steps in Tips for Making Differentiation Easy. I wrote this post to help you become organized and feel confident to help meet the needs of each of your students!

Strategy #6: Using Student Names in the Classroom

“Hey, you!”

“Who? Me?”

“Yeah, you!”

One of the worst feelings is when someone chooses to not say your name or forgets your name and refers to you as “you.” A person’s name is so important to their identity. As a teacher, you know that addressing your students by name is essential in building positive relationships. When students feel valued and recognized as individuals, they are more willing to build trust and rapport with you.

Using their names creates a personal connection, fosters a sense of belonging, and can increase their engagement in the classroom. Incorporating student names into your teaching and classroom environment can be done in many ways. For example, use name tags or nameplates on desks, assign classroom jobs using their names, or create personalized rewards.

Another way to engage students using their names is to incorporate them into your lessons. Turn boring word problems into pure excitement just by adding in student names. Your students will love to be the star of their own classroom questions. And. . . you don’t even have to write your own questions to do this. Use the questions from your textbook or lesson and just change out the names. You can even make the setting and events line up with things you’ve done as a class.

When students feel valued and respected, they are more likely to pay attention and actively participate in discussions and activities. The engagement and success levels of your students begin with that one simple but powerful decision to use their names.

Strategy #7: Make Cross-Curricular Connections

During my practicums during college, I planned a few cross-curricular lesson plans. I didn’t really start appreciating cross-curricular connections until my first full year of teaching. I remember sitting down with all of my school’s standards and wondering when, where, and how was I going to fit all of these into our 180-day school year.

I quickly realized that making cross-curricular connections was such a powerful way to deepen students’ learning and increase engagement. Added bonus, it made my teaching a little less frenzied knowing I was teaching to several different standards at one time!

Math crafts and STEM activities are a great way to integrate subjects like math, science, art, reading, and writing. For example, students can build the skeletal system using Q-tips or create a math craft where they write about the math they are using.

Any time that I can connect multiple skills or standards in one activity, I feel like I’ve won the teacher time management lottery! So much so, that now my goal is to try and always incorporate multiple skills or standards in my classroom activity. That’s why I created a variety of math crafts for different holidays. Students can add some holiday learning and fine motor skills to their practice of basic math operations.

STEM activities are also great ways to get students working on multiple skills and concepts at the same time. I was constantly looking for hands-on STEM resources that provided my students an authentic, approachable learning experience when it came to science, technology, engineering, and math. I created a series of STEM resources that cover a range of STEM-related topics – coding, robotics, chemistry, and physics. These activities are innovative and help to bring these subjects to life by being hands-on and interactive. My students ask me every day when our next STEM activity will be! They love being collaborative with their team members, designing and manipulating the materials for the end goal!

These activities not only make learning more meaningful but also foster critical thinking and problem-solving skills!

Strategy #8: Use Active Response Techniques

Fun student responses are a great way to promote engagement in the classroom. One of the reasons why I love this is because there is no end to your options! And. . . the sillier the better when it comes to keeping students engaged. My advice is to find several that will work for you and have them in your teacher toolbox to rotate through!

One student response I use is to have students complete an action to show which answer they agree with. For example, I have the students touch their noses if they agree with a statement or touch the floor if they disagree. You can easily change up the two things they touch or add a new action. Sometimes I will save this technique for that time in the lesson when attention starts to fall off. So, for the first few minutes, we use our traditional thumbs up or thumbs down. Then out of nowhere, I change it up. I can quickly see who is paying attention and this surprise change usually results in lots of giggles.

Call and response activities are also effective for engagement, active listening, and classroom management. They are so many out there, like:

1, 2, 3 Eyes on Me….1, 2 Eyes on You

Holy Moly…Guacamole

Hocus Pocus…Time to Focus

These types of calls are a great way to get student attention when they have been working independently.

Lastly, I use four corners and whiteboards, especially during review sessions before a test. Each corner of my room will represent an answer choice, such as A, B, C, or D. I will read off the question, and the students will move to the corner with the correct answer.

Allowing students to interact with a lesson using whiteboards is another great way to increase engagement. Each student receives their own whiteboard and marker. They listen to the question being asked, and they write down their response on the whiteboard. I will count down 3, 2, 1, and then say “Flip.” The students will hold up their whiteboards and show me what they wrote. I can quickly look at their responses and see who is understanding and who needs more practice. It’s amazing how excited my students become when they hear, “Please grab a whiteboard.”

These responses not only make learning fun but also promote active listening and critical thinking skills. Keep in mind these are just a few examples of active student response ideas. Anything that allows students to actively participate in the lesson without a traditional pencil and paper activity will help improve engagement. Experiment with them, and see what works best for you and your students!

Strategy #9: Hands-On Activities to Promote Active Learning

Hands-on activities provide an excellent way to promote active learning and engagement. Through my years of teaching, I have observed the power of hands-on activities with my students. It doesn’t matter the age. And. . . the science of learning supports this! Doing results in better learning than just seeing or hearing.

A great example of hands-on learning is STEM activities. The basis of STEM learning is that students are using what they know to build and create. Even if they don’t have a deep understanding of the concepts, the opportunity to plan, create, test, and correct, offers valuable learning opportunities.

Try out some free STEM Activities in your classroom and watch as the engagement soars!

Another way I incorporate hands-on learning is through Color by Code Math Activities. I like to incorporate these pages into one of my math centers. Students are free to use any available math manipulatives as they solve the problems. Then, instead of writing the answer, they color the space with the correct color. The students love that they don’t have to write their answers in the traditional way. My students love these pages because they enjoy trying to figure out what the picture is, and I love that they are getting in key math skills practice!

BONUS Strategy: Songs and Chants

Sometimes my students have a difficult time remembering a new concept. I often feel that this can happen when they aren’t actively engaged in the lessons. When this happens I know it is time to tap into my inner rock star. Just kidding – but not really. Making up songs or chants is a great way to engage students and help them remember. There’s something about the rhythm that just reaches the brain differently.

Not sure where to start? Choose a common tune that the kids know or try the “I don’t know but I’ve been told” military cadence. Write your own version to help students remember the concepts they have been learning.

Here’s an example that I have used in my classroom when working on place value models.

Teacher: I don’t know but I’ve been told

Students: I don’t know but I’ve been told

Teacher: Tens are tall and ones are small

Students: Tens are tall and ones are small

Teacher: Then hundreds are after that

Students: Then hundreds are after that

Teacher: They are round and they are fat

Students: They are round and they are fat

Add some hand motions to the words and you’ve got a multi-sensory, interactive learning song that your students will be fully engaged with and aren’t soon to forget!

In the last decade we have seen a slow increase in the use of technology and digital activities in the classroom. Fast forward to 2020 and that number rose exponentially. Yes, much of that growth was out of necessity instead of choice. But, where does that leave us now? As hard as it was to transform education overnight, it wasn’t all bad. In the 21st Century there are many benefits of using digital activities in the classroom.

Preparing Students for the Future

The world of technology that we live in now is only going to grow and expand as our students get older. Everyday technology is being integrated into life in new ways. Everyday new technology is being created. Everyday we become more and more reliant on technology to help us work efficiently and effectively.

We can’t necessarily train our students to use the exact technological resources they will use in the future. That technology hasn’t been invented yet, or at least not made available to the mainstream public. However, we absolutely can make using technology to complete work a normal and expected part of their lives.

Through digital classroom activities we teach our students that technology can help us learn, solve problems, and complete projects. We can make reading and writing digitally something our students are comfortable doing. Now, before you send me an email about age appropriate expectations, please know that I absolutely believe that our students still need opportunities to read and write on paper too. But, if that is all we provided our students with, we are doing them a disservice. We can’t teach and prepare our students for the world we live in today, we have to prepare them for the world they will live in tomorrow.

Engaging Learners

Like it or not, the use of digital activities in the classroom increases student engagement. Most, if not all of our students have grown up on technology since they were very young. They know it, they are used to it and they like it. Using what students like, to facilitate learning, has always been one of the best ways to engage students. Using technology in this way is no exception.

Not sure if you agree? Do an experiment in your own classroom. Find an activity that would normally cause students to groan, procrastinate or otherwise be unengaged. Have them complete it and just observe their demeanor, interest, attitude and proficiency. Then, the next day complete a digital activity that covers the same skill or concept. Again, observe and notice the changes. If I was a betting woman, I’d be putting my dollars on the digital activity.

Building Independence

Digital activities have a lot of benefits that help our students work independently. While students complete activities, many digital activities provide them with immediate feedback. Students are given the ability to find and correct mistakes or review their answer. They immediately know if their answer was right or wrong allowing them to learn from it and apply what they learned to future questions.

Additionally, there are many digital activities that are self-grading. That means they not only grade the activity but they provide the grading information or activity data directly to the teacher. Can you say TIME SAVER!!!! Now, instead of spending your precious time grading the papers, you can use the time to review the data and let it guide you in making instructional decisions.

My Favorite Digital Platforms

There are so many ways to use digital activities in the classroom. After a few years of dabbling and a year of almost constant use, I have developed some favorites and so have my students.

Boom Learning

If you are not familiar with Boom Learning, it is an online site where you can use Boom Cards (digital task cards). There are thousands of different Boom Card Decks available for almost any skill or concept you can think of.

Students will complete the digital task cards by going to Boom Learning or using a direct link that you share with them. Students can complete the digital activity on a computer, tablet or even a phone. This makes them perfect for in class or at home use.

One of the things I love about Boom Cards is the focused opportunity they provide for students to review and practice a specific skill. Students focus on one skill or concept and get repeated practice. As they complete the activity they get IMMEDIATE feedback on their answers.

Boom Card Examples

I have put together a variety of Boom Card Decks to help my students master important reading, language arts and math skills. Check out this slide show to see some of the activities you can find in the Boom Cards. Each set focuses on one skill. This slideshow contains activities from different sets so you can get a good idea of the skills and activities students can do with Boom Cards. You can find all of my Boom Card Decks in my store at Teachers Pay Teachers.

Try Boom Cards for Free

I know that this might be a new type of digital activity for you and your students. So why don’t you try a set. You can grab these Multiple Meaning Words Boom Cards for free by clicking the image below. If you love them as much as I do, you can upgrade your BOOM account so you can differentiate decks for your students and see their scores on particular decks!

Google Based Apps

Who would have thought that a web based app like Google Slides, a Google version of Powerpoint, Google Sheets, a Google version of Excel, and Google Forms would be great platforms for classroom activities? But they are! They make a great base for interactive activities that keep our kids involved in the learning.

1. Google Slides

Using Google Slides, students can move things around, type, add shapes or images, and so much more. What students do will vary greatly depending on the activity. But no matter what they are doing there is one thing you can count on – they will be engaged!

Since the activities are done with a Google app, they can be completed anywhere that a student has internet access. No need for students to have a specific program. Google Slide activities are also super easy to share with students. If you use Google Classroom you quickly and easily share through that. Otherwise, creating a simple share link is a very easy way to share the activity with your students.

One of the things I love about Google Slides activities is that in addition to the academic focus, students are getting some great hands-on technology practice. They are learning mouse skills, how to drag and drop, typing, and more. It’s truly a platform that allows you to focus on multiple skills with one activity. I don’t know about you, but in this day when time seems to be in short supply, meeting multiple standards is a great benefit.

Here’s just a few of the Google Slides activities you can find in my store:

2. Google Sheets

I don’t know about you, but when I think of spreadsheets I don’t think of elementary students. But trust me when I say you don’t want to miss this learning activity. Google Sheets, an online Excel alternative, has become home to some of the most fun and engaging digital activities.

These digital mystery pictures are so engaging that my students beg for more. As students answer questions correctly, the picture slowly reveals itself pixel by pixel.

Just look at all the addition problems students complete in this activity. The amount of practice is equal to or more than a traditional worksheet. However, the student engagement and excitement is so much higher.

These mystery pictures are a great way to connect our students love of pixel art with learning. I don’t know about you, but any time my students beg to do math I know I’ve found a great learning activity.

You find all of these digital Picture Reveal resources in my TpT store. There are the perfect seasonal addition to your math centers or math practice. You can find these 3 digit addition activities for:

Back to School

3. Google Forms

Google Forms are another great online platform for facilitating learning. With a Google Form you can share activities that range from practice to tests, and exit tickets to escape rooms. There’s a lot of versatility when setting up a form that gives you room for some creative learning fun.

There are two primary ways that I really love using Google Forms in the classroom. The first is for digital task cards. Following the same idea as Boom Cards, Google Forms also provides a wonderful platform for students to complete digital task cards. These sets can be edited to delete or add questions in the set. Unlike Boom Cards, they do not provide immediate feedback for the student.

Students see one task card at a time which really helps them focus on the task at hand. Students will mark their answers on the Google form and then move to the next task card. When they are done, they submit their answers and Google does the grading for you! As the teacher you will have access to all of their answer choices and a final grade. And . . . since the student responses are provided to you in a spreadsheet format, you can also do some sorting of the spreadsheet to analyze the data in different ways.

The second activity that I love on Google Forms is Escape Rooms! Talk about instant engagement. Students love, love, love digital escape rooms.

Here, a variety of tasks related to a skill or concept are presented in story form. Students must work through the story and solve the tasks correctly in order to “escape” or solve the final problem in the story.

This Easter themed digital escape room will have your students working on:

counting money

comparing 3 digit numbers

addition and subtraction with and without regrouping

place value – create the largest numbers

missing addends

even and odd numbers

adding 3 numbers

This makes a great math skills review in the days leading up to the Easter holiday.

I’ve also put together a Valentine’s Day digital escape room that students love too! In the Case of the Secret Admirer, students must complete math activities in order to eliminate suspects. Through this activity your students will review:

building numbers with place value blocks

comparing 3 digit numbers

addition with and without regrouping

least to greatest with 3 digit numbers

even and odd numbers

number patterns

crack a code

This math activity is a great math center or assignment during February. It also makes a really fun activity to do on Valentine’s Day when students are more focused on the card exchange and the party. This fun and engaging mystery will keep their attention and help you get some learning done on such a hard day.

I am in the process of creating other themed escape rooms to support digital learning!

4. QR Codes

One last digital platform that I want to share with you is QR codes. Even if you have never used a QR code you have probably seen one.

QR codes are those scannable squares that open up a message or website. Here, students complete the task cards and use the QR codes to check their answer. They are so helpful getting student independently.

These QR Code task card activities are perfect for math centers, small group teaching activities and even whole class games! On Teachers Pay Teachers you can find a variety of math QR task cards for skills like counting money, telling time, elapsed time, addition, subtraction and more!

Save these Digital Activities for Your Classroom

I hope you’ve found some new digital resources that you can use in your classroom. Save this to your favorite classroom Pinterest board so you can come back when you are ready for more!

Has your school decided to go virtual this year? Are you stressing over finding something that will work for you and your classroom? This post will help you narrow down some options for your e-learning. It’s not about using all of them, it’s about finding the perfect fit. I know you will find something that you’ll love in these 15 amazing distance learning resources!

Distance Learning Resources

1. Google Classroom

Google Classroom has easily taken over schools during distance learning! Why is it so popular? The platform is a free service for schools and for anyone with a Google account. Google Classroom is easy to implement for teachers and students are able to show their learning in a variety of ways. Classroom is a one-stop shop for teachers to create classes, assign assignments, communicate and stay organized, all without using any paper!

I am constantly growing my Google Classroom products. One of my favorite new lines is this seasonal and differentiated 3-digit addition picture reveal!

2. Seesaw

Right up there, and one of my personal favorites, is Seesaw! Seesaw uses a variety of tools to create an individualized and meaningful experience for the students. It’s also very teacher and student friendly. Using the Seesaw’s digital portfolio, teachers can distribute assignments for the students to interact with using their built-in annotation tools. Students are able to show what they know through text, draw, pictures, and voice and video recordings. Seesaw can transform any jpg into an interactive pdf!

3. ClassDojo

I use Seesaw for my student work, but I can’t leave ClassDojo out! Dojo is great for parent communication and classroom behavior. Teachers can create categories for students to earn points for and use in whatever behavior management system you have in place. I like to connect them to my reward coupons, which I will continue to use appropriate ones through distance learning.

As a teacher, when I think of 2020 I will forever remember the year that education changed almost overnight. Teachers, administrators and school leadership worked tirelessly to keep education moving forward when the doors of the school were closed. The solution was remote teaching and distance learning. Along with teachers around the world, I jumped into remote learning and now I want to share some of the best tips and ideas that I received and discovered.

1. Communication is Key

Just like any new thing we do in our classrooms, learning outside the classroom requires the same communication and explicit instructions. Communicating with both parents and students is of vital importance.

Communicating With Parents

Teaching remotely doesn’t just include your students. In fact, depending on the age and grade level of your students a varying amount of parental involvement will be part of the remote learning process. We must remember that most of our students’ parents have not been trained as teachers. Here’s 5 important things we should communicate to the parents.

Teach them how to use the digital learning platform you are using, if you are using one. Remember, the idea of learning online probably didn’t exist when any of the parents were in school. They are new to this too! Show them where to go and what to click on.

Tell (or better yet show) them exactly what needs to be done in each assignment. Think of it like visual sub plans. If you have a specific objective or expectation, that needs to be communicated with the person that will be sitting side by side with the student.

Explain the learning goals so that you and the parents on the same page. If you have a handwriting assignment, let the parents know that handwriting is the objective. However, if the goal is complete sentences and proper punctuation, let the parents know that too. Nothing will diminish the at home learning relationship more than parents who are requiring perfection in every area. After all, our students rarely do perfect work in the classroom so why should they be expected to do that at home.

Give the parents some tips for “classroom” management and motivating students. Let them know that creating some structure and routine will help in the learning process. Give them a sample schedule and ideas for brain breaks. Give them ideas for learning activities that don’t involve sitting at the computer or kitchen table.

Give the parents permission to to be flexible and give themselves and their children grace. Let them know that you understand what they are going through, and the stress they are likely facing. Let them know that you are on their side and that you are a team.

Communicating with Students

In the classroom it is important to give students explicit instructions. We start the year teaching them classroom procedures and how to make the classroom run efficiently. We lay out the steps for completing a task or working on independent centers. We give explicit instructions. Outside of the classroom, explicit instructions are even more important.

Our students may or may not have experience with the online learning platform. We must teach them how to use it, where to look for assignments and communication, and where and how to turn in assignments.

When it comes to assignments, we must give explicit instructions for those too. In the classroom, we are there to answer questions and monitor our students. During distance learning, we must try to think ahead to the questions our students will ask, or areas they might not understand. By answering those questions before hand we can set our students up for successful remote learning.

2. Help Students Stay Organized

Organization will be an important part of remote teaching. Not only must we as teachers be organized, but we must help our students stay organized too. In the classroom, we help our students transition from one activity to another. At home, much of that responsibility will be on them and for a young student that could be very overwhelming. So help your students stay organized.

A daily or weekly assignment checklist is a great way to help students. More than just a list of assignments, a check list that allows them to mark off completed assignments not only gives them a visual but also a sense of accomplishment. I don’t know about you but I’ve been known to add something I just finished to my to-do list just so I could mark it off. I know I can’t be the only one!

Grab a free EDITABLE checklist here to keep your students on track!

Another way to help them stay organized is by letting them know what supplies they will need. Do they need only the computer or will they be printing something out? Do they need a book to reference or is everything provided? Will they be working in Google or on another platform like Boom Learning or SeeSaw? Helping them to gather their supplies before beginning an assignment will only help their ability to focus and complete an assignment without interruption.

3. Don’t Be Afraid of Video

Let me be the first to say that video is scary. I don’t like seeing myself on video or hearing my voice. But we are own worst critic. I mean, we don’t critique ourselves or criticize ourselves when we are teaching in person. But the thought of teaching on a video brings out something different in us and causes that little voice in our head to start talking.

But let’s set aside our fears for a minute and think about our students. Our students are very visual. They have grown up in an era of video and video games and in order to grab and hold their attention when we aren’t in the classroom with them, video is our best option. Here’s some easy video ideas that don’t feel like your standing in front of a TV camera:

Online Video Conference – Using an online video conference system like Google Hangouts, Google Meet, or Zoom not only lets you be on video but also your students. When you can see who you are talking to it sure makes video easier. It feels less like a monologue and more like a comfortable conversation with old friends.

Use your phone – Creating a video from your phone is definitely less scary than a video camera. It feels more like a Facebook Live, an Instagram video or a Marco Polo message. Just grab your phone and start talking to your students.

Try a screen-sharing video – There are some amazing free screen-sharing programs you can use that will allow you to record your screen along with your voice. Some also allow you to have a small video of yourself in the corner too. These videos are an excellent way to teach visual concepts like math, or model how to complete an assignment. Try Screencastify or Screencast-O-Matic for some easy to use options.

4. Try a Flipped Classroom Model

If you have some “in person” time by means of a video conference call, try a flipped classroom model of teaching. If you are not familiar with a flipped classroom model it is one where students “homework” is watching an instructional video. This becomes the main teaching time – the meat of your lessons. Then, your in person time is focused on guiding students in the application process. You can answer questions, clear up uncertainties and help students complete assignments.

If you are nervous about the video part – go back and re-read number 3 above. Then don’t worry! The instructional videos don’t have to be completed by you – although that would be ideal. But, there are many instructional videos online that can be used to by simply providing links to your students. Make sure to always watch the videos first to make sure there is nothing inappropriate.

5. Do What You Do Best – Teach

Whether in the classroom or teaching remotely, do what you do best and teach. Use that same passion you have in the classroom for remote teaching. Plan the same great lessons you would if you were in the classroom. Sure, some of the activities might look different, but that doesn’t mean they are any less effective in helping your students learn.

In the last year, the number of digital resources for education has grown exponentially. As you search for activities that work well with remote teaching use search terms like “distance learning,” “google classroom,” “google drive,” and “boom cards.” All of these will provide you with resources that are perfect for remote teaching.

Remote Teaching Wrap-Up

Remote Teaching might not be your first choice and it will definitely be different than teaching in the classroom, but it doesn’t have to be bad. In fact, there are lots of great real life and technology skills that our students can learn and develop from distance learning that they just don’t get in the classroom. So grab the bull by the horns and be the best remote teacher you can be!

As we step into the classroom after the holiday season, we know that rekindling students’ enthusiasm for learning can be a delightful challenge. But fear not; I’ve got you covered! Post-winter break can be a memorable time with a few engaging activities those first few weeks back in school.

Use Technology Activities to Engage Students

Students LOVE being on a computer! Use this to your advantage to help support your curriculum! One way that I use technology in my classroom is with QR codes. QR codes can be incorporated into any activity and any subject!

I like to use https://www.qrstuff.com/ for my QR codes. The site is easy to navigate and you can incorporate the code by copying and pasting!

How would you do this? Take your basic worksheet, answer your questions, and add a QR codes to the question. Students will simply read the question, answer it, and check with the QR code to see if they are correct! INSTANT engagement (and self-checking)!!!!

I use these a lot for those tedious math facts that students do not enjoy doing over and over again…..but we all know practice makes perfect! You can find them in my store for multiple math concepts.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Activities to engage students in learning can be hard to come by.

Another great option for technology is using my new found friend, BOOM Cards. BOOM Cards are great for centers, group work, or individually. You can read more about BOOM Cards here and pick up a FREE DECK while you’re over there!

This short video will show you what BOOM Cards are all about! Digital, self-checking, no cutting, engaging……they’re literally PERFECT!!!

I have purchased the VERY CHEAP yearly membership to track my students work and I can assign different decks to each student to help differentiate. You can also add a membership to create your own BOOM decks so they specifically meet the needs of your students!

If you are interested in some pre-made BOOM decks, you can check out my listings HERE.

Use STEM Activities to Engage Students!

With feedback like this,

“LOVE!!!!! My first graders are BEGGING me to do more of these activities! Thank you!” and “Great hands-on activities for the children to explore and problem solve,” it’s no wonder why STEM has taken over the classroom IF it has meaning! STEM activities are so powerful at the elementary level because it really plays off of youngsters inquisitive and exploratory minds. We want to foster that love for asking questions, creating, developing, challenging, reinventing, and everything else STEM offers so that children can handle problem solving in the “real” world.

The great thing about STEM is that you can come up with an activity by looking around you. Reading Diary of a Spider? Have the students create a spider that flies (ballooning). Reading about animal habitats? Have the students create a habitat and explain their rationale! Anything can be made into a STEM project!

For Halloween, my students created spider webs from my STEM packs! They had to make a web that collected the most spiders. Here are some varieties they came up with!

Color by Code Activities to Engage Students

Now this one is a little more difficult to create on your own and time consuming! My color by codes are on another level in my classroom! It’s a great way to 1. incorporate the holiday and 2. practice those skills that need to be done over and over again.

Ask my kids to do a worksheet of 30 problems, NOT HAPPENING! But, give them a color by code to complete with 50 problems and it’s all good Sometimes, I don’t get them!!!

Here are some that I have available if you’re interested in checking them out. These are also differentiated for your needs. You can take a closer look by clicking HERE.

Skill Swirls Activities to Engage Students

What’s a Skill Swirl you ask? These are activities that I invented to help combat the basic worksheet. They are self-checking and have students ENGAGED from start to finish. One of my students said, “It’s like we are learning!” Yes little one, you are learning. *face palm*

Basically students will begin with a problem, find the answer on a slip, paste it down, and continue with the next problem. If the answer isn’t there, then it is incorrect. Here is a video to help understand the format. You can also snag an Addition to 10 Skill Swirl FREEBIE here!

Have you ever learned about a new instructional tool or strategy and wondered how you managed to teach before it existed? Well, if you have never used or heard of BOOM Cards before, you’re about to have that moment. You can thank me later.

In case you’re late to the party, Boom Cards are digital, time-saving task cards. No printing. No cutting. No recording sheets for kids to log answers on. Everything is digital, interactive, and FUN!

Teachers everywhere are jumping on the Boom Card bandwagon, but in case you need some extra encouragement, here are some perks of making the switch to digital. (And make sure you check out the FREE Boom Cards deck I’m sharing just with my readers below!)

Immediate Feedback

Boom Cards immediately tell students whether they have gotten their answer correct or not. The traditional, paper/pencil version of task cards requires students to work through an entire set before turning a paper in to you for you to check. By the time they know if they were doing the work correctly, they’ve already finished the assignment! Digital task cards let students know when they need to try again, preventing students from wasting too much time doing something incorrectly!

Versatile

However you have used task cards in your classroom, you can make them digital with Boom Cards! Vocabulary practice, math skills, reading strategies, grammar, science or social studies topics…the list is endless! Teach your students how to use one platform, and open up a world of topics for them to practice.

Incorporate Technology

We all know the importance of exposing our students to 21st century skills in our classrooms. However, the challenge comes when we don’t have access to purposeful programs for our students to use. Boom Cards eliminates all of that! You have control over what your students practice, and you know that they won’t be going to a “store” or playing non-academic games for brain breaks that so many educational websites offer. These task cards are focused, rigorous, and digital! That’s the best of all worlds!
